Have you considered putting up a sign that says:

"Caution: Hole. Fall in at own risk!" ?

look at the third pick

it says "DANGER Open Hole" and "DANGER Keep Out" we also have "NO TRESPASSING" signs at the road entrance onto the site. yet we still find tourist and yokels wondering in there once in a while

How deep is the hole? Mabey you could use the track hoe, or and backfill it with dirt.

about 200 feet. backfilling isn't really an option.

edit: and again, we want to keep the hole clear in case we ever want to go back in there. shaft sinking cost 1000$ a foot nowadays, even if it's only used as a vent raise the shaft is an extremely valuable asset on the property. we want to keep it intact as much as possible

What are the boards used at present? 18' railroad ties would work great, and if you can get ones with the good treating they will last just as long as concrete or steel for a fraction of the cost

we have 4"x4" 14' lengths crossing it with 2"x8" 8' long (two 8' lengths back to back)

railroad ties were mentioned, concrete will be used
