hey guys, I have a problem that you might be able to help with. I have a playstation 2 ( I know HOW COOL IS THAT MAN :D ) anyway, I've had this console for 5 years now and it's only recently ( when i say recently, I mean last night) started to show signs of technical problems. The problem is it is now giving me disc reading errors and it makes this anoyying rattling sound when it tries to read the discs. i actually want to open it and inspect the inside of it and fix the problem.

There is a problem with that, as you know with the ps2 the outer casing is designed to fit together without any screws. It sort of just clips together and I have no idea how to open it without breaking it. Does anyone know how i can open the case without breaking it cause i really want to get it fixed without taking it to a proffesional and having to pay a lot of money. it would really be helpful if someone can thanks. 8)

It's looking like you don't want to spend any money but if you're going to get alot more use out of it then just buy a new console for about $130. Maybe you can pick up a used one at one of the used games stores for half that.

I had that happen to me as well and what the errors and rattling signify is that the disc reader is becoming worn out (or something like that). Eventually, you PS2 will stop reading discs altogether. At least, mine did.

I really would advise against opening the console yourself because more likely than not, it won't work at all after you reassemble it. If you really like your PS2, you can have it serviced, but what will likely happen is the technician will say it'll cost more to fix it than replace it.

But I DON'T WANNA BUY A NEW ONE I WANNA FIX MINE [cry] :D

Seriously though i want to try and avoid spending money and try to save as much as possible so i want to attempt to try and fix the one i have first if it is fixable before i decide to buy another one, but if you think its cheaper to just buy another one then i'll probably just do that but first i want to open up the one i have.

It's cheaper. Parts alone will cost more than a new PS2. PS2 DVD rom drives aren't like your normal DVD ROM drives.

Ante up a few more bucks, and get a PS3, while they still are backwards compatible.
