http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070724/ap_ ... ce_cooling

This is an environmentally sound technique that should help cut energy costs and pollution. However, some nutball will find something wrong with this. Me, I'd be finding all sorts excuses to go check on the cooling rooms. I got shit for sneaking into one of the freezers in Costco yesterday. 'Too cold, you get sick.'

We have an old fan(and I do mean old) on our fourth floor balcony that has its vanes arranged in a drum like fashion. It has a huge container for ice in the bottom. When we sit out there in the evening or have a bbq, we use it quite a bit. The thing is like a plane when it is set on full. I can buy 20 litres of ice for about NT$ 40 and have it delivered.

Energy wise this idea saves as much energy as the stupid "hydrogen economy."

The practical benefit here is the use of cheaper off-peak electricity to by extension cool the buildings.

A lot of jurisdictions price power, depending on demand and time of day.

Evaporators freezing water are much much more efficient than those cooling air, simply because of the liquid medium involved.

The compressors involved a likely smaller an use less power.

The authorities in London were thinking of something similar for the Tube as well. And it's just as well because technically it get so hot in the London Tube that if the passengers were cattle, it would be against EU rules to transport them in temperatures over 45C.

Agreed. The energy needed to make the ice would actually exceed the energy needed to simply cool the building during the day. All the firm is doing is saving money by buying offpeak power and storing the potential in ice.
