But we use oil for alot more stuff then fuel... It is used in the manufacture of plastics, fertilizers, asphalt, etc....

And if we don't burn it for energy, we'll have more to make plastics.

Besides isn't our Canadian loonie really a petrol dollar? What would happen if our oil based economies in ALberta and merging economies in Saskatchewan & Newfoundland were to collaspe?

Our economy will, hopefully, benefit from being on the cutting edge of whatever energy source replaces petroleum. There will be lots of jobs for Albertans and Newfies in the NEW energy industry.

The fallacy of your argument is Alberta and Newfoundland will be on the cutting edge for new energies. What if they are not? And what alternative energy are you hedging on as the replacement for fossil fuels?

Then they better find other businesses to get into.

I'm not hedging. I expect to be dead by the time oil is replaced as our primary energy source.

And once again...what is the new fuel? What is the alternative energy to oil? Everyone talks about it but fail to disclose what it is....

Without more information, yes you're hedging....

No, no I'm not hedging. I just bought a new gas furnace. I drive 7400lbs of Japanese gas-guzzling steel. I have my suits chemically dry cleaned. I like plastic sex toys. I love oil. I'm not sure you understand the meaning of the word "hedge".

One day, oil will be replaced as a fuel source, just as coal has, just as whale blubber has. Sorry I don't have my crystal ball handy to tell you what that replacement will be.

Yes the oil parade is coming top an end people are asking for it and Hybrids are increasing in sales , people are starting to care about the mess we make . Alberta is going to be left with some very toxic lakes and no American money to clean it up.

Wow... I think you need to trade in your crystal ball as it appears to be quite faulty... It can predict that oil is running out and will be replaced BUT can not foretell what energy source will be it's successor...!!!!

Isn't that kind of like predicting a Stanley Cup will be won in 2010 but not telling us by what team? Or tomorrow will be a new day but not disclose the day of the week...

There in lies the Achilles heel of your prognostication...

And you consider that a stretch? Faulty logic? Okay.

Maybe humans will continue to burn oil as primary fuel forever. I doubt it. I don't much care though 'cause I don't expect to be alive in 50 years.

Hybrids are fashionable. They are not efficient.

The 1989 Geo Metro with the 1.0L 3-cylinder engine was rated at 49mpg in the city and 58mpg on the highway and, with some modest modifications a number of owners bumped that up to 75mpg.

Compared to the Toyota Prius that only gets 41mpg I'm wondering what all the fuss about hybrids is all about?

A 41mpg hybrid is NOT more efficient than a 58mpg 3 cylinder standard car.

A Toyota Prius requires more energy to manufacture than does a GM Hummer because it is considerably more complex with not just an internal combustion engine, but an electric motor, a very complex transmission, and 1500 pounds of batteries.

Add to this that every hybrid is a toxic nightmare when it comes time to dispose of it due to those lovely batteries.

Sorry, hybrids are just a fad.

Oil, like whale oil and coal, will be replaced when something better comes along. Hybrids require oil so they are not the 'something better'.

Comparing a Geo Metro to a Prius ignores the most obvious difference, that is Size. Although I agree that Hybrids are going to have a short life, they are a good step towards getting off Oil. They are proving new Technology and making the Systems we'll need more affordable/reliable.

The biodiesels sound promising until a cost efficient hydrogen engine can be developed.
