$1:
Over August 5 and 6, Death Valley, the driest place in North America, recorded the most rain in August when 1.46 inches of rain fell, the Earth Conservatory reported, leaving behind mud and damage that’s still being assessed.

A few days prior, on August 2, southern and central Illinois saw 8 to 12 inches of rain over a 12-hour period, the Washington Post reports, submerging vehicles and causing much more damage in the third 1-in-1,000 year rain event in the Midwest this summer.

Between July 25 and July 30, several thunderstorms pounded the Kentucky area with 14 to15 inches of rain falling over the 5-day period, leaving almost 40 people dead and the state experiencing its fourth wettest July on record.

On July 26, St. Louis saw a 1-in-1,000-year rain event when 7.68 inches of rain fell in 6 hours–and a total of 9.04 inches fell during the 15-hour storm–and shattered a 1915 rainfall record, the National Weather Service reports.
