I own a battery charger for Rechargeable Alkaline Battery (1.7Vdc) and I would like to purchase a set of NiMH Battery (1.2 Vdc) for my digital camera.

My question to you guys is: Would my charger be good for the NiMH batteries or is .5Vdc too much of a difference in potential which could cause the batteries to overheat and leak???

You won't 'hurt' your 1.2 vdc's. It will just take longer to charge them.
I have a 'Pure Energy' charger & a lot of batteries. As you have found out, they don't last long!
I purchased an ENERGIZER charger with 4 batteries and got fairly good use out of them but after a few months they don't hold the charge as long to the point that they won't hold a charge even when not in use.The best batteries I have found are 'SONY STAMINA HR6' Next to that is DURACELL 2650 mAh. The higher the # on the battery the longer lasting all the way around. The ENERGIZER CHARGER can be used on any aa or aaa rechargable batteries.

*** You can recharge the batteries even if they are not 'dead' but MAKE SURE to CHARGE COMPLETELY before useing them again.***

******Keep a set of 'regular' Duracell Ultra 1.5 MX 1500 LR6 on hand. You WILL need them at some point!******

Unless your charger has a method of detecting a fully charged battery, Please do not use it. I have seen a NiMH cell blow a hole through a drywall through overcharging.

Quote:
This so-called minus delta V/ delta t bump that is indicative of end-of-charge is much less pronounced in NiMH than Ni Cad, and it is very temperature dependent.

A fully charged Ni Cad reads 1.2v, over this and the cell wants to gas off.
Your charger must be capable of sensing the full charge.

Some more info....

I prefer lithium batteries for cameras.

Thats what I am presently using. but at $10 for a pack of two it becomes expansive. If I had my choice, I would purchase Lithim-Ion but they are hard to find in a AA format. NiMH seems to be the best alternative but I don't want to spend $40 on a charger and batteries if I don't have too.

Oops, lithium-ion is what I meant.

I have a digital-SLR and when I bought it I decided to get two battery packs. I underestimated the power of lithium-ion because I only really need one battery. I can fill a gig of photos on my card without having to recharge.

But yeah, they're expensive.
