I apologize to Terence Dickinson for using "Sky News" for this thread, but I
couldn't think of a better name for it.

BTW Sky News is a CANADIAN based astronomy magazine.

The plan is to post upcomming events visible in the night-time sky using
only the standard issue Mark1 Mod 0 eyeball, although a pair of binoculars
or telescope could, at times be usefull.

If people want to use this space to ask questions about or make comments
about objects or bright lights in the sky ...go for it ...all SERIOUS
questions will be answered or at least addressed.

So to kick it off......

Sept 7...Full Moon...

This is going to be the biggest Full Moon of 2006.

While technically this is not the "Harvest Moon"It should still be great.

Tonight's the night.....try to get out about 7:30 pm local time to get the best effect as the moon always looks bigger close to the horizon.

If you're out a little later..9:00-10:00 look straight up and you will see three bright stars forming a triangle...strangely enough they are called the Summer Triangle. While not a constellation they do show you the position of the summer Milky Way.

enjoy

Friday, September 15

The Moon, just past last quarter, is at its greatest northern declination in 37 years (+28° 43'). For skywatchers at midnorthern latitudes, this means that when the Moon transits the meridian — about an hour after sunrise in the blue sky — it will be abnormally close to straight overhead.

September 22, 2006

An annular eclipse of the Sun, centered on 11:40 UT, will be visible along a path extending through the South Atlantic Ocean. Annularity can be seen from land (just after sunrise) only in the South American countries of Guyana, Suriname, and French Guiana.

Oct. 22 Meteor shower

Estimated hourly rate : 10-15
Meteor showers are best observed in the hours before dawn.

Oct 21-22

Orionid Meteor showers peak tonight.

Anyone with clear skies should be able to see a few tonight, although the best viewing will be well after midnight.

18 Nov

I really thought there would be a little more interest in this but....

Anyhow the Leonid meteor showers are tonight, with the best viewing time about 11:00 pm - 1:00 am EST.The forecast is for a better than usual show this year....see link...

The last time I was lucky enough to have clear skies the show was SPECTACULAR.... 20-30 PER MINUTE! for over an hour.So if anyone is interested get out and have a look.

Leonid meteor showers

Enjoy

We'll give it one last try:

Aug.11-12-13

With no moon in sight to interfere with the Perseid meteor shower,
skygazers can expect to spot streaking fireballs late Sunday into
dawn Monday regardless of time zone. Astronomers estimate as
many as 60 meteors per hour could flit across the sky at the
shower's peak. While the best viewing will be late Sunday night into
Monday morning those away from the city will be able to see them
Saturday night as well.

This year's sky show comes with an added bonus: Mars will be visible
as a bright red dot in the northeastern sky, while Jupiter will be
shining brightly low in the Southwest.

Total lunar eclipse 28 August

The lunar eclipse begins at 12:54 PDT (Pacific Daylight Time) when the Moon begins to enter the Earth’s shadow. About two hours later, the color of the Moon will change from its normal grayish color to a reddish color.

The red color comes about because light from the Sun as it reaches the Earth must pass through the dense atmosphere of Earth before reaching the Moon. The scattering of this sunlight produces the red coloring.

Thus, at about 2:52 PDT the start of the total lunar eclipse begins.

On the east coast, the begin of the total lunar eclipse is 5:52 am EDT August 28, in the central part of the country its 4:52 am CDT, in the mountain time region it is 3:52 am MDT

Anyone with a good Southern view should now stand away from the computer and take a look outside....a great full moon which in about 5 hours will be totally eclipsed.

Well I managed to stay awake for the whole thing, well through until totality anyway. The only problem was some high clouds comming in at about 2:30. It was definitely worth staying up for though, unfortunately I wasn't able to get any pictures.
