Two-thirds of Canadians household using cell phone services, says study

[align=left]OTTAWA (CP) - A new study says that while the majority of Canadian households rely on land-line telephone services, two-thirds also have cellular telephone service.

Statistics Canada reports that by December 2006 about 90.5 per cent of households reported having a land-line, while 66.8 per cent reported having at least one cell phone.

About 80 per cent of Alberta households reported using cellular phone service, the highest proportion among the provinces.

This contrasted sharply with rates in New Brunswick, where only 57.5 per cent used cell phones and in Quebec, where the proportion was 57.9 per cent.

The proportion of households that relied solely on cell phones remained relatively unchanged from the previous year at about five per cent, compared with 4.8 per cent in December 2005.

By December 2006, about 10.6 per cent of Canadian households reported using a cable telephone service or a voice over IP service, led by 13.5 per cent of Albertans and 13.2 per cent of Quebecers compared with a low of 4.9 per cent in Newfoundland and Labrador.

The survey also showed that 1.2 per cent of households did not have any telephone service at all, unchanged from the previous year.

I had a cell phone when I lived in Asia but couldn't bring myself to buy one here for the longest time...it's such a ripoff here in Canada (long contracts, expensive phones, etc) .

I finally broke down last year and got a pay as you go phone...I ran out of minutes last week and didn't even notice...

I had a landline in my apartment for the longest time, but I'm rarely there to use it, so it just became a stationary voicemail receiver. The ability to save numbers is a big plus as well, as I could never remember them or find the piece of paper they were written on.

It's slowly catching on in Canada.

It should be... I hear all Dutchies in Canada complain about the phonecosts. Skype is free of charge... You only need a computer and a headset...

I've used it for webcam chats, but not a whole lot.
