Without looking at the video I would say the chunnel helped kill the hovercraft. Back in 85 I rode a hovercraft from Calais to Dover. It was pretty cool and very fast. We had these grand plans to travel all over the British Isles. We were not very bright. The pound was so much stronger than the dollar back then, and the prices in pounds were pretty high. It did not help that we were staying in a very expensive tourist area near Buckingham Palace. A few days sightseeing and getting shitfaced in London's pubs and we were broke AF. It was all we could do to catch a hydrofoil to Ostend. Our prepaid Eurorail pass got us back home to Germany from Ostend, but we were swiping a lot of crackers off of tables in the dining car along the way.

The people who owned private islands would've bitched about the noise from giant hovercraft and how the wake made their martinis spill and then the gov't Opposition would've trashed them so bad for so long that when they finally won an election the best offer they could get was $1.
