Lots of stories on this.

http://www.usnews.com/blogs/capital-com ... ldera.html

The US Geologic Survey shows 250+ earthquakes in Yellowstone in the past few days and there is now a warning to one of my friends in Cody, Wyoming from her local fire department to be prepared for a possible evacuation on short notice. They're saying not to be too concerned, but to be organized and prepared by keeping the car full of gas/petrol and by keeping plenty of food and bottled water handy just in case this isn't just a freak earthquake swarm.

If this bugger goes off Canada will see ashfall in a lot of areas all the way to Newfoundland. 8O

It would not exactly be the best answer to global warming either, since the potential ash in the upper atmosphere would seriously cool the planet, since less heat would be getting through.

UPDATE:

There have been 296 earthquakes in the northeast portion of Yellowstone Lake in just the past week. Read the article.

My company has an office in Salt Lake City and we're starting to implement a disaster response to save data on servers outside of the region just in case this thing goes off.

Thanks for the update Bart. I have been reading and watching the progress as well. It will be disastrous. I dont think folks are truly comprehending the magnitude of the destruction, in the event of an explosion.

It may not be a massive explosion but it could still be a volcanic eruption of a more typical magnitude. In any case, it would still be one of those things to pay attention to just in case. Myself, I'm just stocking up on some extra canned food and drinking water. I'll use all of it anyway but just in case this goes off it'll disrupt traffic on Interstate 80 and it'll disrupt rail traffic for the Union Pacific in the area - both are the USA's principle trancontinental commerce routes and an eruption (even a small one) would definitely impact them.

Best not to drive if the ash is bad,we got shut down by caterpillar when Helens blew, they said the ash would get through the air filters.

Pantyhose over the air filter works pretty good if you need to get out of Dodge. If you can stay where you are the thing you need to worry about is ash fall building up on your roof. Keeping a breathing filter handy for getting up on the roof to shovel off the ash is not a bad idea. I have one for mowing the lawn (allergies) although a volcano is not so big a worry in California.
