Because the people who are in charge of making the standards are politicians. And far too many would prefer mythology to be taught than the uncomfortable truth.

The strongest proponents of this are ardent defenders of don't tread on me lies of personal responsibility. Yet, when it comes to abortion, drug policy or teaching actual history they completely lose the plot.
