The following is in response to Obama's speech about the downgrade and etc. from earlier today.

Obama’s horrifyingly bad speech

By Jennifer Rubin

He was a half hour late. His head turned from side to side as if he were attending a tennis match. He practically never looked in the camera, as if he were averting our gaze. And those were the strong parts of President Obama’s disastrous speech.

It was a bit like a slow-motion car crash. After a while, one stopped listening to the blather and simply watched the stock ticker go down and down. And down some more.

Obama had all weekend and the best he could come up with was a reiteration of his plea for a “balanced” approach to deficit control. That’s right. We have a tumbling stock market, over 9 percent unemployment and a flight to gold (some investment advisers say it will be at $2,500 per ounce by year’s end). All he can do is promise to raise taxes.

Now that’s not exactly right. He did trot our proposals for a one-year extension of the payroll tax cut and extension of unemployment benefits. And he promised to make his own proposal to the debt committee. That’s it. It is what he has been saying for what seems like forever. He has nothing new.

He did say one indisputably true thing: The downgrade was more a comment on our political dysfunction than on our ability to repay our debts. That is the dysfunction that he has presided over. That is the paralysis he perpetuated by insisting for months on tax increases. He was describing his own disastrous tenure as president.

This illuminated Obama’s predicament — devoid of ideas, bitter about political opposition and completely in over his head. If the election were held today, I bet he’d lose. By a lot.

To whom?
Bachman? Reid? Perry? Donald Trump?

Like they would have said anything else. Don't forget Obama does not write his own speeches.

The New York Stock Exchange closed 633 points down after the speech.

At this rate, Brenda, Obama could lose the election to you.

You ought to run, you need a job anyway, right?

It had gone down from the moment it opened, as have all the stock exchanges all around the globe.

I am not an American born citizen, dear :P

What's a kick here is that as the markets collapse so do Federal revenues on capital gains. Meaning that the government's ability to repay the debt gets worse with every decline of the economy.

It also means that even if we don't borrow another penny, the debt ratio against GDP will get worse as the GDP declines.

This, my friends, is the true start of the first depression of the 21st century.

Now what happens when austerity budgets get implemented in North America?

Riots in the USA and maybe even Canada, too, as the 'entitled' classes demand their subsidy checks?

At this point I'm wondering if Bart is implying that any Canadian could walk south of the border, point out how much better we're doing up here, and get scores of votes anyways.

Don't exclude Congress. The behavior reminded me of some segments from the Planet of the Apes. The Tea Party is much more interested in seeing Obama lose in 2012 than to prevent the country from going into default.

If they push the country into another recession they may get their wish, but Obama will not be the only incumbent to leave office.

I would replace the whole group and start over.

The side to side from one teleprompter to another is a fairly recent development, and though it has no impact on his job execution, it always bugged me. I'm guessing he does it so he can look at everyone in the crowd, but his largest audience is right though that camera lens.

Look in the lens already! You look like Michelle Bachman's State of the Union response.

He used to do it just fine, but that man is long long gone.

He also said in his speech that the USA will always be a AAA nation, but this summer has shown that the USA is clearly not a AAA nation.
