His whole scheme was to #1 - mouth off and get more air time for publicity so more would watch his show..... and #2 - to be the Republican & Tea Baggers' puppet that could say what they all wanted to say without being directly involved or implicated with what he said or did.

Then again perhaps he's no longer running after Obama tore the living snot out of him not too long ago and realized he'd get it even worse if he went up against him in an election, so he tucked his tail between his legs and went back to what he's good for.....
