Do you know how many Black men, currently in jail for assault/attempted murder of police claimed the same thing at their trial? Its actally a common theme in Rap music and the defence has never worked before.

It's worked for at least one white guy - who was being raided for marijuana (he had none).

This idea, and some mutterings about bringing back indentured servitude for defaulters, are still surprisingly popular among certain influential political demographics. The "use a hammer to fix all problems" mindset flows into some rather predictable patterns.

Like the CPC's tough on crime stance?

You sure have a difficult time when it comes to not being a total ass.

You don't see the connection? Springs from the same well.

So wanting to upgrade existing facilities and build new prisons for violent Canadian criminals is without question equivalent in your mind to some dumb-ass Californian politicians using a SWAT team to bust loan defaulter.

You're just another broken-record ideologue who's seriously fucked in the head.

It's a vastly different matter when it's not a criminal defendant saying this, but a sitting Federal Judge who rules on Constitutional matters for the Eastern District of California.

Again, I'm not asserting that Karlton is speaking for 2nd Amendment rights, but for 4th Amendment rights. Karlton has never been a friend of gun rights and I am specifically disclaiming any such assertion here.

Passing minimum sentencing provisions and other laws that will inflate our already too large prison population (vs other civilized countries) is "The "use a hammer to fix all problems" mindset" to use your phrase. That nail has already been pounded flat in the US, we don't need to think it will work better for us.

So we should continue with our decades-old Trudeaupian non-solution of giving murderers, pedophiles, violent drug dealers, repeat killer drunk drivers, and vicious rapists prison sentences that only average about five years? Or even less? Absolutely unacceptable. And expecting this to ever work is as ridiculous a belief that sending a SWAT team after student loan defaulters will terrify people who can't even get a job to start paying up is.

The one thing I give much respect to American conservatives (the real ones, not the fake neocons) is that they still hold on to their guns (no pun intended) when it comes to holding onto their rights, at least what's left of them.

Something that democrats and neocons have only paid lip service too.

You sound like a hammer yourself. Do you really think just putting more people in jail will ever address the problem? If it hasn't worked in the US, why would it be different here. How do more civilized countries manage with a much smaller prison population? But keep hammering away. It will feel really good when you stop.

Please provide us with a full list of aberrant and criminal behaviours that you want to redefine so they're no longer a problem, like your belief in full-spectrum legalization of drugs, just so the rest of us can see where you're coming from as well as giving us a preview of the societal nightmare that you'd like to lead us to.

Andy's World 101

criminals = helpless victims
victims = whiners, get over it
want to make things tougher on real criminals = what are you, some kind of fucking fascist?

What I would like us to do is copy the civilized countries that have much smaller prison populations, yet aren't over run by crime. Instead of feeding red meat to the troglodytes and going the way that even the US is admitting hasn't worked.
