http://ca.news.yahoo.com/bin-laden%E2%80%99s-death-is-a-pivotal-victory-for-obama-.html

Quote:
However, political history also offers some important cautions about how short-lived such victories can be in the heat of a re-election effort. Take, for example, former President George H.W. Bush's sky-high poll numbers in the aftermath of the successful 1991 Gulf War, which made him seem virtually unbeatable by his likely Democratic opponents.
But as the 1992 campaign drew closer, Bush 41's numbers steadily dropped, and lost his bid for a second term, thanks mostly to public anxiety over the struggling economy--an issue that also seems likely to dominate the upcoming 2012 campaign, at least for now.

Obama should have kept Obama on ice and pulled him out during the 2012 race. That's what I always figured Bush was going to do.

Obama wont get anything from this, he was simply the guy in office at the time.
It's not like he was jumping from the helicopter.

Did get the birth certificate derailed for a few days, but it will come back.

It would be nice if this actually restarts Americans' faith in themselves, but I
dont think that will happen either.

Couple of happy days, max a week, then back to the shit.

I see that the difference is simply BS.

Ya never know, but I don't think it will make much difference. Especially when it appears the Republicans are trying to destroy their chances of seriously challenging him.

If anything it should put that 'weak on terror' BS on ice permanently. It was nonsense to begin with and hopefully it'll end up, just like the birth certificate issue, as being the domain of the fringists and cranks.

Obama used cocaine. You should do one of your hate on rants on him.

Concur.

The GOP 'Good Old Boys' club is hard at work destroying the party's most visible leader - Palin - and they're back to their same old tricks of pushing pathetic, boring old white men in blue suits. Mitt "Romneycare" Romney is the leader of the 'official' pack so far and there is no way in hell I'd vote for him. I'll vote for the Libertarian first.

The 2012 election is the GOP's election to lose and the dumb ba$tards are working hard to do exactly that. :?

Euphoria is a short lived emotion. By next year it will be "so what have you done for us lately." It does give him some not soft on terror cred.

If he plays this right, it could be huge. The GOP can't use the "Dems are weak on national security" line anymore, at least for now.

A good parallel is Jimmy Carter's botched mission to rescue American hostages in Iran; sending special forces helicopters in on an extremely dangerous mission that will go public. There are differences of course, but if that mission had been successful, Carter may have defeated Regan.

Too soon to call it. There's eighteen months left for Obama to do something really stupid and screw up the winning hand the Republicans seem determined to give him.

Nixon, in 1972 won a landslide re-election by 49 states out of 50 and still screwed it up so I don't rule anything out.

It's also good to remember that right after Churchill won the war for England the Brits turned him out.

Gratitude, it seems, has a historically short memory.

I don't think so. The overall sentiment that I got was "Now we can start healing". That is huge...

Had that rescue mission worked Carter still would've lost. His biggest factor defeating him with Reagan was that Carter was a pessimist who said that America's best days were behind us and Reagan was the optimist who said our best days were yet to come. You just can't beat that kind of positioning in an election.

Right now, Obama is still posing as the optimist but he could be upstaged by a charismatic and positive Republican...if the Republicans were running one.
