It would have been forgivable. Barely. But the Americans were playing the Russians at the time. And the Canadian crowd wasn't just rooting for the Russians -- amazing enough in itself, considering that bitter history -- it was rooting against the Americans. And the chanters weren't so much interested in a hockey game as scoring points against America, the country, not the team. (Take away the beer bellies and the baseball caps, and you could have had yourself an anti-WTO demonstration. When the hockey louts start chanting the same slogans as the local Trotskyist cell, you know you have an ugly trend.) The Canadian crowd's antipathy toward the American team has been a constant. The Americans have noticed. In their 2-1 quarter-final win over the Czechs, U.S. goalie Cory Schneider said he had to concentrate to block out the boos raining down from the stands. Kyle and his team deserve an apology. I understand the US team was treated very well by tourney organizers, but some of the fans in the stands were idiots. Aside from the US sucks chant, these geniuses generally cheered loudest for any team playing against the US right to the last minute of every game. It was pathetic really. They even taunted US goalie Schneider in the Bronze medal game shouting his name late into the 3rd when the Fins clearly had won. This kid who was giving his all is also the Vancouver Canucks draft pick. He must be looking forward to going to that town. Shows what years of defining a nation through subtle hatred of a neighbour amounts to. What should have been a proud moment for us, turned into a spectacle with people booing 17~19 year olds playing for free to represent their country. But yeah...we don't hate "americans", just their foreign policy. I'd like to see someone explain that bullshit line to one of those kids. |

I think we are entitled to demonstrate some of our insatisfaction toward their bullyism. I agree it is totally disgraceful and simply further antagonize hardliners. A "polite" silence would be far more appropriate. Am not sure how masses can better behave. Perhaps the annoucer should remind people of civility and simply recommend silence to peopl in the crowd not agreeing with the country foreign actions. There has got be a lesson on this... Not sure either how other countries are dealing with similar hostility mood elsewhere at international sporting events. --- "We are all in this together somehow, some more than others somehow" |

If you are talking about some broader thing, then maybe those fans could write a letter to the ed concerning their hatred for all things American. Because that is what they displayed by booing kids. <<There has got be a lesson on this... >> The lesson is that we should watch the hyperbole and irrational fear of Americans. Starting with our own PM. Some kid from North Dakota, or Minnesota doesn't deserve this treatment. It was a national emberassment and further debunks the whole "we don't hate them - just their Gov't" mythology. |

It is indeed true that teenage kids from backwoods USA don't deserve to be treated like this. It is also true that a lot of the civilians killed by the US military also deserved life. Who's to say who deserves anything? As long as US foreign policy effectively bitchslaps the ENTIRE world from the lofty zenith of imperial hubris, a lot of innocent people everywhere are gonna get treatment they don't deserve. Why this backlash surprises anybody is beyond me. |

Unfortunate, for the kids who picked up the tab for the unpopular Bush administration and current US foreign policy. Also unfortunate for Canada's reputation, via the understated eloquence of the: "get em to the seat, can't do a thing with em", breed of Hockey fan. |

"Foreign relations experts" states the article. Probably in jest, or is this sarcasm? Politics in sports is not new. South Africa was ostricized for many years, and so was Taiwan. It is admirable to separate sport from politics, but virtually impossible. I agree with one of the above comments that "somebody" should have made an announcement that the crowd refrain from this unacceptable behaviour. I believe the arena management should apologize. |
