Quebec not as open as Canada

$1:
Compared to other Canadians, Quebecers have less contact with foreigners, eat less foreign cuisine,...... and don't work as much in multicultural environments, a poll suggests.

Quebecers are also more comfortable with people of their own ethnic origin and are more likely to think minorities weaken their culture, according to the Léger Marketing poll, issued yesterday at a conference on Quebec's policy of interculturalism.

Let's start by saying that it's only a poll. I do not look at polls as very efficient (usually political polls). But this one is rather fascinating.

I love Quebec's stance on multiculturism. :D

Surveys (polls) are one of the most extensively used tool for social scientists.

They're one of the most efficient way to define a population (more efficient than census and if well done can be even more representative than the vote results because of the % of people who vote).

I don't see why people think it's all good. The less we expose ourselves to other culture, the more prone we're going to be to xenophobia as a society. Quebec already prove Xenophobia with their whole 'Accordement raisonables' event. Anybody even listened to the commission live? Some people said ridiculous things.

The Romans were one of the greatest civilization in the world because they understood this concept. They offered citizenship to a lot of people, Gaul, Germans, Greeks, etc... and took the best thing each culture had to offer (the Roman legions copied equipment used in Spain, their gods are based on greek gods).

At the opposite xenophobic societies collapsed much more quickly and never reached such a status. The Soviet Union, Germany between the mid 19th century and the mid 20th century, the Greeks.

I see people with other country's flags cheering this thread, that's senseless.

While I favor that Quebec looks for immigrants with similar beliefs (Vietnam, Indonesia) instead of french speaking immigrants, I don't think we have to go around and say multiculturalism is bad. It's actually the other way around, it is the best way for a society to grow more quickly.

A Canadian citizen is a Canadian citizen, no matter where he is from. Heck I know first generation immigrant who are in the military protecting a bunch of old root Canadians who never did anything for the country.

The ''Accommodements Raisonables'' brought by Mario Dumont was actually a good concept. It's not the exposure, or lack thereof, to other cultures. Rather what is considered reasonable for new immigrants coming to Quebec.

Surely, with all the Kirpan issue, Sikhs and everything concerning the turban, The sugar shack incident, and so forth.

New immigrants are coming to this country (Canada) and province (Quebec) expecting that everything must be handed to them without any implications. Hold on !!!

It's up to them, the immigrant population, to adapt to our already existing culture.

If they want the same as ''their old culture'' and they don't seem to like our ways, then it's as simple as to say that they are free to go back to their Motherland. A little harsh I know, but...... How would it seem for a Canadian to travel abroad, let's say the Middle East, and impose their culture over there. Please tell me what the response would be :? They simply could not. So why should we have to bend over backwards to accomodate theirs. :D

So basically, there is a point to where we must say enough. Adapt or else. Therefore, this whole accomodation issue in Quebec is a good one.

Don't you think you are over-generalizing? I know a lot of Muslims who really don't give anything about most things related to their religion in public.

Actually I have yet to meet a single immigrant who wants to impose his culture outside of his private space (house/shop).

Yes we have a prayer room at my school. But any student can request to have a room if he/she reserves it before. Heck students reserve classroom that have projectors and play videogames...

Sikhs are a minority in the muslim world and even a bigger minority in Quebec. In many cases they adapt and agree not to bring it to school. However the smaller kirpans blade length is legal to carry on the streets in Canada.

Every now and then you hear an immigrant complaining and being irrational. But don't tell me you never heard a woman (or man) at a registry being all irrational over the cashier and screaming to get his/her manager.

People also seem to think that immigrants will brainwash us and change our culture. I wouldn't be too scared of that, I don't see too many white, middle class Canadians converting to Islam.

50,000 new immigrants every year in Quebec, 99% of them in Montreal. This city has become a hell hole and 2 of their neighbourhoods are among the most dangerous according to a recent world survey from the “ City Living “ magazine.

1 - Hillbrow , Johannesburg , South Africa
2 - Badawa , Lagos , Nigeria
3 - Little Burgundy, Montreal, Quebec
4 - The city, Kinshasa , Congo ( formely Zaire )
5 - Verdun , Montreal , Quebec

I think the Quebec government should put a 5 year ban on immigration. Anyway who needs PHD’s from Ouagadagou University ?

Why ban immigration? It's going to solve everything? Why not do something about the long-standing social inequality in those neighborhoods?

99% of them in Montreal? Where was that from? This would mean that only 500 immigrants didn't head to Montreal. This seems like a stretch.

Also the 'City Living' isn't peer-reviewed, so does it hold any water as a trustful source?

5 year ban on immigration ….we need a break ! we need to regroup and think what kind of Quebec we want . Immigration has pushed us to the limits, too much , too fast ….and we need to breath !!!

Look !! No Farouk , no Azizz , no Shlomo ,no N’goudno is gonna a tell me whether I can have a Christmas tree or not at my workplace or on my frontyard ! No fuck’n way !

This is my home , my Quebec. I want my kids to live in a nice and safe environment. Over the last few years , immigration has brought us many gangsters-to-be and very few engineers…. So let’s all take a break and think !!

Montreal is already doomed , finished , a sh**hole , a violent and unsafe city where 8 year-olds
are terrorized at school by street-gang immigrants. No surprise “ City Living “ has 2 Montreal neighborhoods among the most dangerous in the world.

Good night , JoBec

That's xenophobia at it's most pure form.

You sound exactly like a religious extremist.

To prove this: You completely dismissed anything that contradicted what you though. That's the kind of things relativists and soft thinkers do.

Do you even know what peer-reviewed means?

Do you have any example of a Mr. Farouk or Ms. Azizz coming to your door and saying 'take off this christmas tree?' What about a Dr. N'Goudno suing the hospital he works at because of the Christmas tree inside of it? No I haven't heard about that.

This is your home? That's totally wrong. You're calling Quebec YOURS? That's a fascist comment. As far as I know, immigrants are part of society. Society is what makes Quebec and Canada. If you want to drug yourself with fallacies and irrationality go ahead.

Most immigrants I know are at the head of their classes. And peer-reviewed studies support the fact that the kids of immigrants are way more successful than 'white middle class Canadians'.

The next thing I expect you to say is 'They steal our jobs'.
