After the doctor examined Lolita, he left her to dress and went into his office. When she joined him, he was studying the contents of an open folder in front of him.
“Sit down,” he told her gesturing to a chair in front of the desk.
“So what’s the verdict?” she asked when she was seated.
“First, how is your appetite?”
“Practically non-existent,” she replied making a sour face. “I have to force myself to take a few bites just so that I can have some sustenance. This morning I noticed some white spots on my tongue.”
“You have thrush, Mrs. Rose.”
“What does that mean, Doctor? I thought only babies got thrush,” she said, bewildered.
“Dr. Andrews faxed your medical records to me, Mrs. Rose. I will have to run some tests, but…” He picked up the top sheet of paper from the folder. “I just received this from him a short while ago. This report is from the blood sample he took from you when you visited him recently. The test results show that you have the incurable disease known as Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome, or AIDS. I’m sorry to give you the bad news, but you need to know why you keep coming down with something new, why you’re not feeling any better and why you’re losing weight. On the other hand, thousands more people are living with AIDS for longer periods than when the disease first surfaced.”
Lolita gasped. “But…but…it’s impossible, Doctor. How can I have AIDS? Are you sure there’s not some mistake? Maybe the blood test results are incorrect.”
“I don’t think the lab would make such a drastic mistake, Mrs. Rose. As I said before, I’ll run some more tests, but I think the results will be the same.”
Lolita buried her face in her hands. “This can’t be happening.” She raised her head as another thought struck her. “Maybe my records got mixed up with someone else’s,” she said, hopefully.
Dr. Boodram stood. “In that case, Mrs. Rose, I think we should start those tests now. Are you up to it?”
Lolita stood, a ray of hope igniting her body. “Yes! Yes, I’m ready.”
After the tests, Lolita is again sitting facing Dr. Boodram.
“How soon will I know if I have…” she couldn’t find the courage to say the word.
“In about a week. When are you returning to St. Croix?”
“Tomorrow,” Lolita whispered.
“Do you want me to call you with the results or will you be coming back here?”
She was pre-occupied, and after a moment, she shook her head to clear it. “Uh…I’ll be back. No. No. I’ll call you, Doctor. Please don’t call. I’ll contact you.” She buried her face in her hands and let out a strangled cry.
The doctor went to stand beside her, patting her shoulder. “It’s going to be okay. Your husband and children will…”
She jerked upright. “No! No! If the tests come back positive, my family must never know.” She grabbed the doctor’s wrist. “You have to help me survive, Dr. Boodram. If the tests come back positive you have to save me. My husband holds a prestigious position in St. Croix. It would be too embarrassing if people find out I have AIDS.”
