The intergalactic shooter Mass Effect 2 took home Canadian Game of the Year, as well as three additional awards, at the second annual Canadian Video Game Awards on Wednesday night.

Held in Vancouver, the awards are voted on by the public and celebrate the best in Canadian videogame development. There were 12 categories in all, including the prestigious Canadian Game of the Year as well as Best Downloadable Game and Best Game Design.

Developed by the Edmonton studio BioWare and published by Electronic Arts, Mass Effect 2 won the top prize as well as Best Console Game, Best Game Design and Best Writing.

Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood, from Ubisoft Montreal, received two awards: Best Audio and Best Visual Arts.

The event also featured some new awards introduced this year. WOMP!, created by XnEh?/Centre for Digital Media, won Best Student Game, while ModNation Racers, by United Front Games, won the Centre for Digital Media and Innovation Award.

Members of the public were invited to submit nominations for each category, and voted for Game of the Year.

Game of the Year: Mass Effect 2 (Bioware/Electronic Arts)
Best Console Game: Mass Effect 2 (Bioware/Electronic Arts)
Best Game on the Go: Osmos for iPad (Hemisphere Games)

Do you mean the Mass Effect 2 mining adventure?

I'm happy to see that the long standing tradition of EA destroying the good and promoting the bland of everything they touch has not yet managed to infect the Mass Effect name, even if it's already beginning to show in the direction Dragon Age 2 took a bit. Here's to hoping that they allow BioWare to have enough of it's freedom to not take this Canadian giant all the way into mass produced obscurity.

... although the joys of mining in Mass Effect 2 is something I've yet to encounter (my last computer couldn't handle it).

Mining is one of the more "mundane" parts of MA2.

Mundane is putting it mildly.

"Shepherd, we need you to race against time and save us from the Reaper threat".

"We just can't provide you with much in the way of equipment so you'll have to spend most of your time surveying planets from orbit because we can't afford survey ships, oh and here is a list of unrelated assignments. Please complete them for a little extra spending money

- Thnx
The Illusive man "

Meh, the mining portion, although pretty stupid, did give me amusement when I did it to Uranus. Yeah sure, childish, but funny.
