Government
Motors
Company

Meanwhile, Ford was offered the bailout and said "No thanks."

I stand on my own two feet and appreciate a company that does the same.

What exactly are you looking for? Something more like the traditional SUV's (back when they were trucks) or something with more seating?

What exactly am I looking for? Why, everything of course! I want the fun and zip of that AWD sub-compact car, with the seating of the mini van, and the tow package of a heavy duty truck!

All kidding aside, I am looking for a vehicle that suits my family needs. A big plus would be something that satisfies some of our wants as well.

Needs:
People mover. I am running around with 5 bodies (at a minimum), with 3 already at or near 6' height.

Cargo space to handles the goods of said people or the 2 dogs, and on rare occasions...both.

Wants:
Towing capability in the 5,000-7,0000 lbs range.

Fun to drive.

AWD for the Mrs. in winter.

My wants pull me towards the traditional, truck based SUV, my needs favour the traditional minivan.

Based on long term costs, and actual usage, I will probably be better served by getting a mini van and renting, or borrowing, an full size SUV when required.

It's the towing capacity that's gonna be hard to find. Even most half ton trucks only have a tow rating around 7 to 8 k and that's the sticker capacity. You'd only be able to tow up to 5500 lbs, anything over that would only be safe to tow over a short distance. Mind you if it's for a trailer most ultra lights are under that weight provided you stay under 29 feet and tow them dry.

Ya I'd agree that a Yukon (or comparable in a Ford Expedition) is probably what you're after. *A Yukon XL 2500 would give you everything you need and want plus you'd be able to tow pretty much anything but they are a big vehicle 8O and cost a pretty penny.

The Unimog has too high of a center of gravity. You need what the professionals use; a Hummer H1.

I'm a fan of the made-in-Canada Knight XV myself;

The general public has no need to have access to Military style Assault vehicles.

Crossing chasms is one of the best parts of H1 ownership.

That's like saying the Chevrolet Cruze is a shortened Equinox. Just because vehicles share a platform, doesn't make them a larger or smaller version of one another.

Really?

I think he should have said, "doesn't necessarily make them a larger or smaller verison..."
The original Chrysler minivans shared a platform (and engine) with the K car.

So buy a Caravan. It's been the obvious choice for over 20 years.
Used to put the kids in the back, pile the Costco stuff in the middle and turn up the radio. Then we couldn't hear them whining....

Sure. If you don't find the poor workmanship found in recent Dodge models a problem.

bootlegga bootlegga:

As a parent with little kids, a CUV makes absolutely no sense.

They have less room, fewer seats and guzzle more gas. Even when they have third row seating, you have to climb over the middle row to get to them - and then you have zero cargo space if you want to go anywhere.

I've been in the market for something bigger of late and I don't see anything but a minivan in my future.

When we were kids it was called a car! When my kids were kids it was called a car.

Why do today's parents need such a big vehicle for two little kids? Do they weigh three hundred pounds each?

Parents haul too much crap around .

Buy a car.
