I don't know about anyone else but if this is true I think I will be moving my accounts to a different bank, maybe it is time to look at a local Credit Union.

...it is against federal rules for any company to bring foreign workers into Canada temporarily if it will put citizens out of work.

“The rules are very clear. You cannot displace Canadians to hire people from abroad,” said Immigration Minister Jason Kenney.

According to the article, the displaced Canadian workers are having to train the foreign workers to do their jobs, so the foreigners don't even have the skills.

Now that the situation has been made public, RBC should be nailed to the wall. If they aren't, an injustice will be perpetrated and RBC will use its success here as a wedge in the door for more of the same.

Not only should the initiative be halted, but the bank should be assessed a hefty fine if the law allows. Maybe such a fine could be used to compensate the Canadian workers for the mental anguish of the injustice.

Also, this sounds to me like it would be a good basis for a class-action lawsuit by the affected workers, but they should not have to subject themselves to that.

Outsourcing Canadian jobs to other countries is bad enough, but bringing in foreigners to displace Canadians in existing jobs is outrageous.

Training their replacements...... I don't think so. A resounding chorus of fuck you is all that the RBC should get

This really is unfortunate. I switched to RBC from CIBC about 5 years ago and I've never been happier with a bank. The customer service I've had from my branch has been above and beyond on numerous occasions.

I know that things aren't always as black and white as this article makes it seem, but I will be following this story, and talking to other banks if they really are just replacing canadians with foriegners for no good reason. I just worry that it won't be more than a couple years bfore there aren't any better choices...

What's Kenney got to do with this? I thought is was Dianne Findley's file? Where is she on this and what is being done about it? But it will probably turn out it's all legal and nothing can be done.

This will be interesting to watch to see if the banksters own the Canadian government and courts as much as they do in the United States. I haven't dealt with RBC in a couple of decades. They were scumbags back then and it appears that they're still scumbags today

Really? I got a pair of bad stories to share about them.

My personal experience with them I had a little awhile ago, when I was still in Petawawa (it was the Pembroke branch). I had to make a deposit to someone else's bank account to cover the cost of my horses board. Before the teller allowed me to make the deposit, I had to provide her with an email, phone number, address, date of birth, yadda yadda yadda yadda. THEN I was allowed to give the account number I was depositing too. For the life of me couldn't figure out why. [huh]

About a month or so goes by and they started calling me, telling me I had paperwork to finish to activate my account. I told them to stick it, this continued for another month or so. Then the phone calls went from me needing to finish off paperwork for an account to owing the bank fees for this account, backdated to when I first "opened" it.

Getting them to realise this was their error, not mine was a bit of an ordeal. First I had to prove that I didn't sign the paperwork, which conveniently was missing. Then I had to prove that I didn't initiate the process to open an account. Never did get around to it (really how could I prove I didn't do something?). Eventually they just stopped calling. So I'm assuming someone there either figured out that they fucked up, or the 60 dollars wasn't worth their time.

The other happened to a friend of mine here in Wainwright. Not my story, so I'm a little fuzzy on the details. Basically she was attempting to liquidate investments, no small amount either. A transaction that was supposed to take 2 weeks (RBC wouldn't allow an instant-transfer due to the amount), took 6 weeks. The person who handles these specific types of funds alleged it was a "busy" time of year, and never called her back to inform her of the predicament. With large-dollar transactions, yes their is a process, but our big banks are professional institutions, and should have the timelines for these things down to a T. If it's going to take 6 weeks, tell your customers it'll take 6 weeks, not 2.

To add a bit more insult to injury, they subsequently attempted to make her purchase a whole bunch of mutual funds with the money, rather than release it to her accounts. I get banks want to make money off their customers, but you don't hold a person hostage with their own money.

Anyways, only dealings with these folks, in 2 diff towns on either side of the country, 2 bad experiences. It's either crooked dealings or incompetency. Either way this article just adds to what I see as a chronic problem in this particular bank. :?

I use TD for both basic banking and investing. So far it's been as good of an experience as banking goes. No major fuck ups, and banking is reasonably easy, fast, and convenient. :)

If an employer is playing some kind of a shell game, that is not consistent with the rules, the immigration minister said. [The Temporary Foreign Worker Program] is not there for employers to make short cuts to displace Canadians and if they are trying to do that, they should have the book thrown at them.

Seriously, Jason, what the fuck are you waiting for ?

I had some rather complicated dealings with TD to settle an estate a few years back and they were very courteous and accommodating (and sympathetic) where they could have been prickly. I was so pleased that I would have switched my accounts froom Scotiabank if I hadn't been (and still am) happy with their service.

My wife used to be a loans officer and then mortgage officer for the Royal Bank. Even though she was, and of course we had our accounts with them, they never gave us much of a break on anything. When she stopped working there, we switched our accounts to Scotia.

The Royal, to my way of thinking, is not as good a bank as some of the others. This episode with the foreign workers doesn't really surprise me.

I've honestly come to the conclusion that quality of service has a lot more to do with the particular branch than the bank. I've heard plenty of bad stories about RBC, but my branch has always been good to me.

My favorite story was the time I was at the branch doing some stuff on the machine. Went to the grocery store after. Finally got to the front of the line with a couple hundred dollars worth of food when I realized I didn't have my card anymore. Rushed back to the bank and got there 20 mins after closing. As I searched the vestibule in the vain hope that my card would be lying on the floor there, an employee actually unlocked and opened the inner door to ask what was up. I explained the situation and asked if maybe a card had been turned in. She brought me inside and checked to see if it was there. After making sure it wasn't, she took the time to get me a new card so I wouldn't be screwed for the weekend.
