The typical problem - bloated, overpaid management and trouble for many of the ordinary workers.

And in this case run by the government, which is a double-whammy...

The problem I have with the article is that it says the folloiwng things:

1) "Businesses are struggling" (are "they" really?) and need every penny they can get their hands on, including taking from employee tips, all is fair game.

2) OTOH, although it seems to acknowledge LCBO employees are getting a raw deal, the article seems to go on to suggest that workers should be happy to have any kind of job for any amount of pay - and suggests waitresses who have their tips taken away by their employer are happy with the arrangement and their pay, unlike those greedy LCBO employees.

So, although the unsupported and excessively general claim that "business" is struggling seems to matter, whether employees are also struggling in the end seems irrelevant to the author. Also kind-of perpetuates the conservative myth of the happy slave - i.e. the working poor are perfectly content to toil away and live in poverty and don't believe they deserve more. At the very least, it seems to say to workers (hey, there's people out there who get it worse, so eat it).

3) Article says LCBO workers get $50k a year "to put bottles in paper bags". It should be noted that 60% of LCBO employees are Part-Time or Temporary employees and earn on average $26k a year.

4) The article suggests that LCBO workers "want more". It should be noted that it is the EMPLOYER who wants to impose a FOUR YEAR wage freeze (with inflation, this is the employer who wants more). At 2% inflation, a 4-year wage freeze = 8% pay cut.

Bloated and overpaid doesn't just speak to the management, it speaks to all the retail workers in the organization.

You think $26k a year is "bloated and overpaid"?

Considering it's part time, and what their job entails, yes it does seem very high compared to other retail type jobs. By all means, give them more fulltime work, if that's what's wanted (with attendant benefits) but the wage for full time work should be more like 36k not 50. Even that's more than a clerk will make other places.

As you know, I'm all for paying people at the bottom more. But when there's such a huge disparity between private and public, that's not right either. And at 50k, these people are just higher than the median wage, for a job that has a low level of skill required.

For a part-time worker...HELL YES!

This is part-time, low skill labour. It's not even close to what comparable retailers pay their staff.

The per-employee profit at the LCBO amounts to more than $200,000 per employee (60& of whom are earning $25k). And remember these aren't just 7-11 clerks here, these are people we expect to enforce drinking laws, they have a number of responsibilities like not selling to drunks, minors, reporting drunk drivers, notifying other stores when they turn away customers, etc.

The official hourly rate for the 60% of PT/Temp clerks starts at $14.94 per hour. That's totally normal IMO

Every retailer faces specific challenges for their workers. It doesn't take a special skill set to ask someone for ID.

They're overpaid stockboys/girls and cashiers that happen to work for the government which pays them far above their market value.

Starting wage of $14.94/hour to stock shelves isn't normal.

But you probably know how easy it is to buy cigarettes for example without getting carded - or even get served alcohol at a bar - because the min wage teenager/immigrant/slob behind the counter just doesn't care. Even if he gets caught and gets fired, he'll just go work at the place across the street.

I've never been able to buy booze without ID. Buying booze underage is hard. And taking that extra step to call the other LCBO stores and warn them (or calling the cops when the drunk customer drives off in a car) is certainly dependent on the personal initiative of the clerk. Also, most LCBO employees are older adults- they're not the same as the teenage cashiers who work at the kwiki-mart, its a different labour pool.

So there's a place where an ordinary Joe can make a good buck - so what.

But management is top-heavy and highly paid, and when it comes to cost-cutting measures it's always the little guy that's supposed to take it in the neck.
