Carlos Slim Helu pitches 3-day workweek, but later retirement

$1:
One of the world's richest men says instead of the current model of a 40-hour workweek and retirement in the 60s, the world should adopt a system of working later in life with more time off.

Mexican magnate Carlos Slim Helu of telecom giant América Móvil told a business conference in Uruguay this weekend he thinks the world needs a "radical change" in the way we approach our working lives.

"This means that people do not retire at 50 or 60 years old," news agency Paraguay.com reported him as saying at the 20th Montevideo Circle meeting, an annual meeting of business leaders and politicians from across Latin America. "People will have to work longer, to 70 or 75 years old, and only work three days a week."

The catch is that sometimes, employees may need and want to work much longer and harder on days when they do work — possibly as much as 11 hours a day, he says.

Slim, a self-made billionaire who has cornered the Mexican telecom market, says the concept of retirement comes from the Industrial Revolution, when life expectancy was until 60 to 75 years old. Now, people in the developed world regularly live to 86, 90 or beyond.

As founder of Telmex, Slim is also putting his money where his mouth is. His telecom conglomerate recently offered a deal to employees whereby long-serving workers can sign up to work well past the traditional retirement age, but on a reduced workload of four days a week.

Slim also says the way we educate young, future workers also needs an overhaul. Education needs to be "not boring [and] memorized, but .. to train and educate. "

"We must train welders, nurses, health technicians, we need to train for jobs," he said, "giving greater importance than ever before towards educating for work."

Some of my most profitable projects were run on 4 x 10 hrs, rather than 5 x 8 hrs.

I know that the overall time worked stayed the same, but the extra day off was huge for morale, which boosted overall productivity.

The biggest problem I have running this(not that I am against it) is how few persons it takes to cause a disruption. It is a rarity for me because crews can not agree which day they want off. One wants Monday, one Friday, some even a mid week break with Wednesday off...but they are all in or none, need all hands for the majority of the tasks.

Aside from that relatively minor snag, I would much prefer more years worked at a less frantic pace. Get to enjoy the journey a little more.

I'd far rather work 4-10's. It makes so much more sense.

I think you'd see a drastic decline in the amount of sick days people took, and less people going over their allotted holiday time as well.

I used to work 4x10 at Intel and while it had its advantages you didn't really get three days off. What you got was a day you spent recovering from your work week and then you had two days off.

I've done 3x12 once...never again. 9x80 is the best work schedule.

I used to work 6am-2pm, and 3pm-9pm, 21-29 days straight, no days off. I think I'd be fine.

I miss 5x8's. Work flew by and I still had plenty of the day left for myself.

4x10's were good too. Every weekend was a long weekend.

Now I work 12 plus hours a day (not incl. the considerable commute). Sure I only work half the year, but 12 hour days are mighty long and the day is a write-off. Work, eat, sleep, repeat.

Used to do 3 12 hrs, even got lots of overtime calls on my days off (week was set at 36 jrs).
I loved it. Most of the guys couldn't handle it... they were BROKE after 4 days off!

Uh.... most of us are already free to work as much or as little as we want.... are we not?

Should?? That sounds creepy. Why not just pull out retirement packages all together?

Who the hell is Slim Helu to try to fool the proletariat to submit to a world law???
