Who exactly were the great financial minds that failed? Wouldn't that be a bit of an oxymoron?

Burton Malkiel? Myron Sholes? Robert Merton? I don't know.

Everyone "knows a guy" who's made all kinds of money day trading. The fact is, you can't make money "playing" the stock market. A big part of that is, as I think you mentioned, transaction costs which eat away any slight profit advantages you may uncover.

People who make money will usually have asymmetrical information, leverage or got lucky.

But, as I said, good luck. If there IS a solution, it's still out there.

Burton Malkiel? Myron Sholes? Robert Merton? Never heard of any of em. Where they Liberal Finance Ministers?

Anyway. I agree that making significant amounts of money in the stock market is rare for amateurs.

Two won the Nobel Prize in Economics for their work in the field of finance (both MIT PhD's, one is even from Timmis). The other is a professor of economics at Princeton, was once the president of the AFA and, really, wrote the book on the efficiency of markets and the inability to "beat" them.

I was just throwing names out there.

I invested a lot of my income/savings into real estate and PM funds, while my wife has diversified quite a bit more, but a large part of her investments were in the RBC. Even though China is hot right now, I took a bath in '97 and will never invest in Asian Growth funds ever again. Everything here is all about appearance and very little about substance. Combine that with endemic corruption and there is bound to be another melt down here soon.
