With all of the work going on along the Trans-Canada highway through the Lower Mainland, you’ve probably noticed signs warning you to slow down or risk paying double for traffic tickets. However, it turns out it’s not true. There are no laws in British Columbia that mandate a double fine and no one seems to know who is responsible for the signage. The B.C. Flaggers Association is incensed over the “double fine” signs. To protect flaggers and motorists, the association says fines should be doubled. The slogan “Obey the fine, or pay double the fine,” is even repeated on the B.C. Ministry of Transportation website. Diane Herback of the B.C. Flaggers Association says the association wants the government to make the untrue statement plastered on signs all over the province, true. Currently, a regular speeding ticket will cost you $138. In a construction zone, the fine jumps to $196 – a 42 per cent increase. If the fines were actually doubled as the signs say, the fine would be $276. It’s the second time in two months that the provincial government has been caught warning of phony fines. Recently it was learned that tickets from Transit Police are unenforceable. Transportation Minister Blair Lekstrom said at the time that the government would move as quickly as possible to close the loophole. Now the minister says he will work with the Attorney-General on the “double the fine” sign issue. |

The flaggers are is shit out of luck. The BC Lieberals and Christie Cluck specifcally don't have the money to make it happen especially since they put all their extra capital into pay raises and performance bonuses for their ministerial aides. Although, this Government hasn't met a law they can't subvert and likely won't stop trying to collect the funds till the Supreme Court steps on their dicks yet again. |

The other unenforceable fines they mentioned are the fines for riding the transit system without paying. You would think that Highly paid transit Engineers and CEO's would have constructed some kind of system that would make it impossible to board the commuter trains or sky train without a ticket. All these people that have been riding free for years could have actually been contributing to the cost of the system instead of constantly demanding more money from tax payers that never use these system. What a concept that would be! I am also reminded of the signs we used to see for years saying, "$2,000. fine for littering". Remember those? Does anyone know of anyone actually ever getting a $2,000 fine for littering? I never did. Just think of all the money that could have been collected. Gee whizz it might even had deterred these selfish morons that think nothing of throwing thier garbage out on the street. Especially at events like the fireworks display where there is a foot of garbage alll over the beaches. Maybe some fines would actually pay for the cleanup costs and policing needed. Not to mention maybe even teaching these selfish people to be a bit more responsible |

Aww gee whiz. Almost makes up for the increased fines when they still hand them out when they all went home and didn't shut off or cover the signs. Driving 50 for 20 goddam kms just because someone might actually be working at 3 in the morning only to discover that of course no one was. |

What a concept that would be! Skytrain is putting in fare gates now. The cost is so high they'll never recoup them in greater ticket sales. And, a lot of the people who don't pay are homeless or shiftless - if they can't ride for free, they likely won't ride at all. While that might make it nicer for the rest of us, it won't really make a diff to transit bottom line. So morally it feels good to make people pay, but financially it's a bust. Presumably you use transportation of some kind. If it's a vehicle, then the roads you use are paid out of general revenue, your subsidy is much greater than transit's. And not just the road costs, but the costs to the medical system from the carnage on the roads, and all the cops' salaries that are out there enforcing traffic laws and investigating accidents etc. And the cost of all the pollution caused by cars - it's a huge amount that cars cost us all. And, if there was no transit, how many more cars would be on the roads - not a pleasant prospect, is it? |
