A military veteran has been told to remove a wheelchair accessible ramp from his property at a Dartmouth trailer park, after receiving permission to build it.

Frederick Randall says his wheelchair helps him maintain his quality of life for now and he expects he will be confined to it one day.

Well, if it is on someone else's property, whether rented or owned...

Just because he is a vet does not mean he can do what he wants. He should have thought of measurements and size before he had it built. And the landowner should have thought about that as well.

Under the building code there are no regulations that would prohibit the construction of a deck based on its proximity to another single-family dwelling, so, from our perspective, the siting of the ramp was perfectly accessible and that’s why we did issue the permit,” says HRM spokesperson Tiffany Chase.

“No issue with him having a wheelchair ramp at all…(the issue is) that it’s encroaching on the other person’s lot,” says Whebby.

Can you even legally demand they remove a ramp?

I think that's a completely different ballgame in a trailer park. You don't own the land, you're only renting it... you still need HRM permission, but the owner of the land can put any conditions or set any rules he wants.

Well, maybe I misunderstand the word 'encroaching' then.

It's not on the neighbour's property, the neighbour says it's too close to his property. Got that right. Unless they built the ramp right over his flower garden then he had no reason to complain. Tough enough to take it out on a handicapped guy but he's probably scared shitless of the headbangers with the pit bulls in the trailer across the way.

It said it all happened in Dartmouth, N.S.. I could run with this story but I'm worried that it might be too sensitive an issue to start cutting a bunch of "Ray from Trailer Park Boys" jokes.

Lived on Hazelhurst, Hawthorne and Lakefront... don't remember any trailers, although the apartments on Lakefront weren't all that great. Strangely, they seem better than I remember. But they were on the lake... the one on the left.

I was under the impression they could actually force the landowner to build it for the tenant as ramps are low cost and dramatically improve quality of life.

I hope he gets to keep his ramp as is. His neighbor should STFU and be grateful that they are not in the situation where they have the need for a ramp themselves.
