Exactly. Plus/minus is a stat that measures the offensive prowess of a line, not the defensive ability of anyone.

bootlegga bootlegga:
Taken in combination with a number of other stats like hits, blocked shots, ice time and so on, it has some merit, but in and of itself, it isn't very useful.

Many coaches and scouts wouldn't agree with you. Myself included.

While plus-minus isn't the be-all-end-all of hockey stats, in today's game with respect to centremen, it's a key factor in judging one's performance in both ends of the rink.

Stick to being a ref.

Just read the list of Free Agent signing and I'll be damned, but I can't find Mr. Grabovski's name anywhere and it make me wonder why?

Is it because he threw his former team and coach under the bus or, could it be that he only knows how to play in one direction and that's downhill with little or no work required or could it be that it's a combination of both?

For some reason when I hear his name mentioned now I can't help but thinking about the KHL calling. :D

Stick to being a ref.

Yeah, Wayne Gretzky and Paul Coffey had great plus/minuses because of their two-way play.

This is 2013. Not 1982. Different game.

Total-system coaches suck. They've been taking all the fun out of hockey ever since one of them blundered across the red-line loopholes that allowed him think up something as hideous the neutral-zone trap. It's that kind of crap that nearly gave the NHL a torpedo beneath the waterline back in the 1990's.

And plus minus is still a piss-poor way to evaluate a player's defense.

As I said, stick to being a ref.

And you stick to being wrong about everything. Plus minus is a line stat, not an individual one. Using it to evaluate a single player is like using team batting average to evaluate individual hitters.

When you have the playing and coaching experience I do, I'll consider your opinion to have merit. Until then, you're just another ref that thinks he's an expert on the game cause he watches hockey.

I never did say that +/- is the only stat to be used when evaluating a player, specifically a centremen. It is part of the equation no matter how many times you say otherwise.

I never said it wasn't part of the equation. I said it wasn't a measure of an individual player's defensive ability. And why do you presume you've played more hockey or at a higher level than me? I bet you haven't.

Either way you'd be wrong.
