Canucks ship Ryan Kesler to Ducks

$1:

The Ryan Kesler saga is over as the Vancouver Canucks traded the veteran centre to the Anaheim Ducks for forward Nick Bonino, defenceman Luca Sbisa and the 24th pick in Friday night's NHL draft.

Vancouver also received a third-round pick Saturday — No. 85 overall — and sent its 2015 third-round selection to Anaheim.

Kesler's full no-trade clause limited the leverage new Canucks general manager Jim Benning had in talks to move him. But the motivation was there because the 29-year-old had issued a trade request to the previous regime.

And Kesler still wanted out.

"I hate losing and that season was painful, to be honest," he said on a conference call. "The fact that they're in a rebuild and are looking to get younger and are years away from being a contender, I think it was just time for me to move on and win and hopefully take home a championship."

In getting the 26-year-old Bonino and 24-year-old Sbisa, the Canucks took more steps toward a youth movement that began in earnest when they sent goalie Roberto Luongo to the Florida Panthers at the NHL trade deadline.

"This trade reinforces our goal to add youth, support our core players and develop draft picks who will contribute to the future success of our team," Benning said in a statement. "Nick Bonino and Luca Sbisa are talented players who immediately bring youth and skill to our roster.

"An additional first- and third-round pick gives us the opportunity to add two strong players to our system."

Kesler had 25 goals and 18 assists in 77 games last season. Kesler has two years left on his contract at a salary and cap hit of US$5 million each.

Bonino had 22 goals and 27 points in 77 games for the Ducks last season, though that included some time alongside Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry.
Injury time

Sbisa missed a substantial part of the 2013-'14 season with a torn tendon in his hand. This is the second time he has been traded on draft day after being a part of the deal that sent Chris Pronger to the Philadelphia Flyers in 2009.

The move was the first major one under Benning and president Trevor Linden. But later Friday, Vancouver secured the No. 50 selection in this year's draft from Tampa Bay for defenceman Jason Garrison, the rights to forward Jeff Costello and the Canucks' seventh-round pick in 2015.

Not long after, the Canucks made a third trade, sending the 85th pick they acquired in the Kesler deal to the New York Rangers for grinder Derek Dorsett.

For Anaheim, the trade seems to be one way to counter the Stanley Cup-champion Los Angeles Kings' 1-2 punch of centres Anze Kopitar and Jeff Carter. Getzlaf and Kesler might represent the third-best combination in the league behind the Kings and Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin of the Pittsburgh Penguins.

That's if Kesler doesn't wear down. One major concern is how much of a toll his 700-plus regular-season and playoff games have taken on his body.

Quite the house cleaning today. Wonder who else will be gone by the next trade deadline.

Wow, gonna miss him. It will certainly change the team. Hopefully for the best, but it's hard to imagine that at this time.

It's the start of a rebuilding process that's for sure.

I think Benning and Linden did damned good for their first kick at the can.

The Kesler trade was as good as could be expected with the hand they were dealt.

In the draft they got a big go-to-the-net center; hopefully in the Bertuzzi mold. He's local, and he's pleased as punk to be here. Gee...been awhile since we tried that trick.

And then they had a later first round pick from the Kesler trade so they snagged a guy who was expected to go much earlier.

Even the later rounds seem to be producing. They got a goalie who's expected to be the US national rep., and they traded a pick for a prospect who's described as "highly touted", and can play next year.

Myself, I have hope. Most likely no cup next year, but soon...

Ryan Miller signs deal to play goal for Canucks

Image

$1:

Rookie general manager Jim Benning continues to put his stamp on the Vancouver Canucks.

The former Boston Bruins assistant GM filled a glaring weakness in net Tuesday, signing unrestricted free-agent goaltender Ryan Miller.

The 33-year-old Miller joins his third National Hockey League team after splitting the 2013-14 season between Buffalo and St. Louis.

Miller's time with the Blues essentially was over when the team re-signed netminder Brian Elliott to a three-year contract worth $7.5 million US.

With St. Louis, Miller had a 10-8-1 record, 2.47 goals-against average and .903 save percentage in 19 regular-season games.

It's believed he preferred to play on the West Coast to be closer to his wife in California.

Eddie Lack and Jacob Markstrom will battle for the backup job at training camp in September.

It's also nice everybody on the team seems happy to be here now. Could lead to team chemistry - that would be a good thing, right?

Young Stars preview: Canucks vs. Oilers

It’s hockey time again.

The Vancouver Canucks kick-off the 2014 Young Stars Classic with a showdown against the Edmonton Oilers Friday in Penticton, BC.

The game can be seen live on Canucks.com starting at 7:30 p.m.

“It’s been a summer of preparation,” said Utica Comets coach Travis Green, who will be behind the Canucks bench, along with his Comets coaching staff for all three games of the tournament.

“I’m anxious to see players come back after having them for a season, I’m anxious to see players that I have heard a lot about and haven’t seen yet and I’m anxious to get going; its hockey time again.”

The team was put through the paces Friday morning and although Green doesn’t have his lines set in stone for tonight, he did say he wants to keep Bo Horvat and Hunter Shinkaruk together, Brendan Gaunce and Nicklas Jensen together, along with Curtis Valk and Mike Zalewski.

“I like to use pairs,” said Green. “I like when the players feel comfortable with each other, we will start that way and see how it goes.”

Green also confirmed that Austin Lotz will start between the pipes for the Canucks tonight. The Everett Silvertips goaltender is expected to play the entire game.

As for the opposition, first round picks Leon Draisaitl and Darnell Nurse headline an Oilers roster that includes 14 players who saw action in the AHL last season. 2012 second-rounder Mitch Moroz is fresh off a Memorial Cup victory with the WHL’s Edmonton Oil Kings and will be looking to make a statement as he enters his first pro season.

The Oilers roster features five defencemen standing 6-foot-4 or taller, along with four forwards at 6-foot-3 and above including 6-foot-5 Bodgan Yakimov, who is fresh off a full season in the KHL and also captured a bronze medal for Russia at the 2014 World Juniors

Meet the newest Vancouver Canucks' head coach......

Image

Willie's amazing race

The first few days of training camp are similar to returning to school.

“How was your summer? What’d you do?”

No one was asking new head coach Willie Desjardins what he did all summer, the players all knew first hand.

As if auditioning for The Amazing Race, Desjardins flew around the world visiting various Vancouver Canucks; the goal was to get to know a veteran core that includes Daniel and Henrik Sedin, Alex Burrows, Kevin Bieksa and Dan Hamhuis.

Desjardins traveled to Sweden, Montreal, Que., Grimsby, Ont. and Smithers, BC., and reached out to nearly every Canucks player over the phone.

Apparently the 'nice-guy' rap Desjardins has is spot on.

“It’s important to me because the players are such a main part of what’s going to happen and you have to find out where they’re at and where they’re coming from,” said Desjardins. “So I really wanted their feedback on where they saw the team and what they believe can happen.”

Desjardins said getting to see the players in a personal setting was nice and that the thing he enjoyed most from the meetings was seeing how passionate the players are.

At the Hamhuis household in Smithers, BC, the entire family shares that passion.

“It was a bit chaotic,” laughed Hamhuis, about coach’s visit. “The girls were touring him around the house, showing him their bedroom, the whole thing, it was a good visit.”

“They were so funny,” added Desjardins, “they had an ice rink and they have a paved way for me to walk up to the rink, I think it was in red. It was pretty amazing; they’re a real great family.”

Fun and games aside, the players got as much out of these visits as Dejardins did.

“We had a chance to sit down and go over his philosophy as a coach and what he believes and what he sees for our team this year and that’s a great way to start,” said Hamhuis, adding that the visits were a real classy move.

“He wants to win, he’s one of us.”

The only downside to Desjardins’ visits and phone calls, according to Chris Higgins, was that they occurred in the summer. No one counted down the days to September and the start of this season like the new Canucks bench boss.

Those who have played under Desjardins, like newcomers Derek Dorsett and Linden Vey, (who were coached by Willie as members of the WHL’s Medicine Hat Tigers) understand his relentless drive and personal approach.

“Willie’s a guy that understands each individual and he respects every guy, it doesn’t matter if you’re the top guy or where you stand,” said Dorsett, who comes to Vancouver after spending two years with the Rangers in New York. “If things aren’t going well he’ll talk to you in a good manner, I think guys play really hard for him because of that respect he has.

"Coming to a new team and to be familiar with the coach is obviously a good thing. Me and Willie did some good things in Medicine Hat and hopefully we can here.”

If Desjardins’ off-season efforts are any indication of how the team will perform this season, get ready for Canucks hockey as you’ve never seen it.

It should be an interesting year. I'm not expecting miracles but am feeling optimistic about the development of the team this season for the future.

Lots of changes but that's ok. Lord knows we needed to do this.

Mostly I'm looking forward to watching hockey once again.

Vancouver vs San Jose

A new era of Canucks hockey begins tonight on two pre-season fronts as one split-squad team will host the San Jose Sharks at Rogers Arena, while another other split-squad roster will head to Stockton, California to battle the other half of the Sharks.

Whether you're a Canuck taking part in the game at Rogers Arena or Stockton Arena tonight, the goal is the same – make an impression. With two games taking place on the same night, it means the majority of the 58 players still remaining in camp will have an opportunity to dress for a game. The same opportunity might not arise again for some of the players in the final five pre-season contests. Tonight's two tilts will be especially critical for youngsters such as Bo Horvat, Hunter Shinkaruk, Linden Vey and Frank Corrado, all of whom are hoping to land a spot on the opening night roster. Fans in Vancouver will have a chance to see the four aforementioned prospects, along with newcomers Radim Vrbata and Derek Dorsett, tonight at Rogers Arena. New goaltender Ryan Miller is not expected to dress for either game tonight.

The Sharks are a team going through a few changes. Like the Canucks, there was plenty of off-season activity involving San Jose although it wasn't so much in terms of players being brought in or shipped out as opposed to an internal change. The Sharks start the pre-season with no official leaders on their roster after stripping the captaincy from Joe Thornton along with the 'A' from Patrick Marleau. One player to keep an eye out on is Brent Burns, the defenceman-turned-forward-turned-defenceman who will be counted on this season to fill the void left by the departure of Dan Boyle. This is the Sharks' first game action since their epic playoff collapse last season against the Kings when they became just the fourth team in NHL history to blow a 3-0 playoff series lead to lose.
