Vancouver at Calgary

The exhibition campaign continues tonight for the Vancouver Canucks at the Scotiabank Saddledome when they take on the Calgary Flames in the first of two games on back-to-back nights against their Pacific Division rival.

It may only be the opening week of the pre-season but if ever there was a game that could provide a few fireworks tonight's game would be the one. One doesn't need much reminding of the bad blood that existed between the Canucks and Flames last season and some of ugly the incidents that marred the five-game season series that was swept by Vancouver. There was now-former Canuck Andrew Alberts being flattened by Calgary's Brian McGrattan on a hit-from-behind in late December, the infamous storming of the Flames locker room by ex-head coach John Tortorella in mid-January, and Daniel Sedin having to be stretchered off the ice following yet another questionable hit by Calgary's Paul Byron in the regular season finale.

With all that said the primary emphasis for most of the players on both clubs tonight will be to either keep pushing for a roster spot or to fine tune their game for the start of the regular season, not to settle old scores. The Canucks started off pre-season on Tuesday by splitting their split-squad games against the Sharks winning 4-2 at Rogers Arena and dropping a 5-2 decision in Stockton. The Flames, who are in the midst of playing three games in three nights, are coming off a 4-3 overtime win last night against the Coyotes in the Kraft Hockeyville contest in Sylvan Lake, Alberta. These two teams will have an immediate rematch tomorrow night at Rogers Arena before facing each other four times during the regular season including on opening night at the Saddledome on October 8.

Vancouver vs Calgary

The 2014 pre-season hits the midway mark for the Canucks tonight when they host the Flames at Rogers Arena in the back half of a home-and-home series.

There were no fireworks – at least not in terms of the shenanigans that we became accustomed to last season – in last night's 3-1 win for the Canucks over the Flames but there was still plenty of noise being made and, once again, it was almost exclusively from the youngsters fighting for a spot on the opening night roster. Hunter Shinkaruk notched his second multi-point performance in as many games with a goal and an assist while Nicklas Jensen delivered what turned out to be the game-winning goal after scoring in his second straight outing.

While fans at Rogers Arena tonight would love to see that trend continue, you can bet they'd also like to see some of the veterans get in on the act as well. After showing flashes of promise on Tuesday, the Sedin twins and Radim Vrbata are expected to draw back into the lineup and hopefully continue to show the chemistry they displayed in the win over San Jose. Tonight should also offer Canucks fans their first glimpse of Ryan Miller, the all-star netminder who inked as a free agent with the team this past summer. On the Flames side, expect to see 2014 fourth overall pick Sam Bennett play his second game in as many nights. Karri Ramo, who is expected to challenge Jonas Hiller for the number one goaltender's job in Calgary, could make his pre-season debut tonight. He has been limited in pre-season action due to a hip injury.

The PP has been looking good, as of this game, but one has to remember....it's only the Lames we're playing..... :wink:

There maybe a bit more competition come Monday when the Arizona Coyotes come to town.

The Vancouver Canucks enter the back half of their 2014 pre-season schedule tonight when they host the newly rechristened Arizona Coyotes at Rogers Arena.

With the pre-season now entering its second and final week, the focus – at least partially – shifts towards fine-tuning for the start of the regular season which opens a week from Wednesday despite the fact there are still a number of roster decisions still to be made. On Friday, the Canucks demonstrated strong play in two areas that they will be the key to success during the regular season – the power play and goaltending – in a 3-0 win over Calgary. Tonight, the Canucks get a chance to face another Pacific Division foe in the Coyotes that, like them, are looking for a bounce back campaign this season.

The Coyotes are just two years removed from a trip to the Western Conference Final but have since missed the playoffs in two straight years. They are in a retool situation somewhat as well after losing two of their top point producers in Radim Vrbata, now of the Canucks, and Mike Ribeiro in the off-season although they are hoping that the acquisition of Sam Gagner, formerly of the Oilers, will help make up for some of the offence lost. The Coyotes won three of the five head-to-head meetings against the Canucks last season, with Mike Smith pitching a pair of shutouts. These two teams will meet five times this regular season, including three times at Rogers Arena, with the first clash coming on November 14 in Vancouver.

Vancouver at Edmonton

The Vancouver Canucks open up a home-and-home series against the Edmonton Oilers tonight at Rexall Place as they inch closer towards the end of the pre-season.

It's probably not too wise – or too healthy for that matter – to put too much stock in pre-season results but winning definitely helps to highlight the positives. Unfortunately, there were very few positives to speak of following Monday's 4-2 loss to the Coyotes for Vancouver outside perhaps of the play of the Sedin twins and Radim Vrbata, and a strong shift or two from the "Kid Line" of Shinkaruk, Horvat and Jensen. Even if tonight's game doesn't count for anything in the grand scheme of things, you can bet the Canucks will want to do everything to avoid having to answer questions about a losing streak heading into Saturday's pre-season finale.

Vancouver will head into Edmonton without their top line of the twins and Vrbata as the three veterans will get what is expected to be their final game off before the start of the regular season. Frank Corrado, who was injured in Monday's loss to the Coyotes, will also be unavailable while Brad Richardson and Zack Kassian are doubtful to suit up as well. Eddie Lack will get the start in net for Vancouver. The Oilers, who are coming off a 3-2 home victory last night over the Coyotes, are looking to extend their pre-season win streak to three games. Goaltender Ben Scrivens went the distance for the Oilers yesterday so he'll likely get tonight off. Taylor Hall and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins did not suit up for Edmonton against Arizona so expect them to draw back in.

Here we go again, not even half way thru the game and Sestito has already taken 3 penalties, the last one only 9 seconds after finishing his 2nd trip to the sin bin... :roll: :roll:

Vancouver Canucks centre Bo Horvat left the team's Thursday night preseason game against the Edmonton Oilers and will not return.

The Canucks' 2013 first-round pick (ninth overall) left the ice in the first period after taking a hit from Oilers right wing Tyler Pitlick.

According to a tweet from the Canucks' official Twitter account, the 19-year-old sustained an upper body injury and will not return to the game.

2-1 Canucks in the usual 'Nucks/Oilers game which saw a total of 82 minutes in penalties, split right down the middle with 41 minutes each. As for Horvat, still nothing more than.....upper body injury. These two teams meet again Saturday in Vancouver.

Vancouver vs Edmonton

The 2014 pre-season finally comes to an end tonight when the Canucks close out their home-and-home series against the Oilers at Rogers Arena.

The end of the pre-season couldn't have come at a better time for the Canucks. Given the way things have gone the last couple of outings, the Canucks might not have any healthy bodies left to start the regular season if the pre-season were to last any longer. After losing Frank Corrado to an upper-body injury on Monday, the Canucks find themselves also without the services of Bo Horvat after the latter suffered an upper-body injury in Thursday's win 2-1 win over Edmonton. Tom Sestito is also a question mark after he missed practice yesterday although the Canucks could get some good news with Brad Richardson and Zack Kassian potentially returning tonight.

Outside of the banged-up bodies, the rest of the Canucks' lineup tonight should closely resemble what their opening night lineup will be. The same, however, can't be said of the Oilers. According to head coach Dallas Eakins, Edmonton is still planning to hold auditions for roster spots tonight and his team isn't expected to make any cuts until the end of pre-season. Among the players still on the Oilers' roster who are battling for a job include forwards Leon Draisaitl and Bogdan Yakimov and blue-liner Darnell Nurse.

Ho hum, 3-2 Canucks, last preseason game for the boys, kind of nice to end with a winning record of 5-2. The Lions could have used some of the 'Nucks luck tonight.... :roll:

The Canucks season opener goes on Wednesday in Calgary at 7:00pm PT.
