I majored in linguistics - I loved it. Never finished the degree though.... the calculus classes just weren't as fun. ;)

English is definitely a Germanic language, but not knowing that doesn't take away from his translation of Forsberg's name.

Doesn't mean he is right either. What do you think since you are so keen on what others think. Lingustics remember. I know some German but don't recognize Fors- Berg as meaning rapid mountains.... What makes you think a sur name even has to have a meaning? Hell, my first name means god-like...

No, you're definitely mentally challenged.

That's becaus it's not german!!! It's SWEDISH! You seem to think Germanic and german are one and the same? German derives from germanic just as swedish does but it does not mean we can understand eachother or that our languages are similar. [bonk]

No, you're definitely mentally challenged.

I've demonstrated the links between the two languages, the history (which I might add you even smashed your face into my elbow when I told you english was germanic) but I suppose all of that was by being mentally challenged, as a step up from a ahistorical vegetable like you.

Something tells me you don't know the difference between a country's name and it's language history but oh well. I've already stated that english was germanic (you botched that up) and that Swedish is a GERMANIC language which doesn't necessarily mean that what they are speaking is the same language they speak in GERMANY. Stop confusing what I say into your own twisted meanings please.

Second, Scandinavian languages are a North Germanic language group, along with West Germanic and the now extinct East Germanic (which included Goths and Vandels) Are they the exact same? No, all languages go though changes and where ever did I say that Swedish is mutually intelligible to German itself? I'll spot you on that one.

Dude... thats not how it works. Italian, French, Spanish, Portuguese, they all have the same origin, but i don't understand every word those languages mean.

Dude... that is how it works and you'll have to offer something else other than that in order to chastise me. Look at the lingustics at each of those languages. You'll note that they are all romance languages, descended from latin. Can you understand each and every single one? No, but they all have the same similarities. Whoever the hell said you had to understand each language as being the same?

Do I speak Swedish? No, can I dispute the translation in any language? Yes.

I am more interested in the history of where the language comes from. Obviously I hit a sore spot in the matter. Now that you mention it, I looked it up and "Ice Berg" literally meaning "mountain of ice" from "Ijsberg" from Dutch, a low german language is loaned to the Swedish as being "Isberg". My only question was how english, a germanic language translated Berg into mountain and obviously, some people got pissed off for some reason. I merely put in the missing pieces.

The real question is can you translate all of it into cylon?

Sorry for the off-topic remark. Silliness abounds tonight.

I thought you were a cylon (re previous avatar).

Its probably just binary and I only know enough know enough binary to ask where the bathroom is.

(10 points for the TV reference).

Oh that guy. He was my Cylon buddy who revealed himself as the seventh Cylon after much dismay. He denied it but I had to put him down. Security for the 12 colonies you see.

Then WHY did you question my translation and say that this does not translate into mountain in german? That's becaus you thought our languages were very similar! EVERYONE understands that. Just give it up, will you.

Are you kidding? Did the English language adopt Ice Berg from Dutch' IJsberg? We don't even know what a thing like that looks like! :P I didn't know that!

"Apartheid" is certainly a Dutch word though. We have a lot of words ending at "heid" :P

Where the hell did I say it didn't translate itself into German? Learn to read first, second, I didn't question your translation, I was contemplating why english didn't have the same language similarities of the word simply because of a surname even though it went though similar transitions by point of origin and no, it isn't because I thought the languages were similar and I'll spot you to point out where I said such a thing but nice try. I even pointed out that they weren't similar but in some cases mutually intelligible to each other but hey, thats you.

Give what up? Pointing out your ineptitude for the history of language? Nope, I've already demonstrated my understanding, where's yours?

So I have this straight (or you could answer).....why do you care? Why are you singling me out on this exchange?

If I had a problem with his translation, he could have simply connected the dots instead of flinging feces (insults) at me yet that goes unchallenged or chastised by you, why?

He gave a simple translation of the name, you went off on a tangent about the origin of languages.

I'm not singling you out. I responded to your posts about the linguistics... some of which you deleted.

Hardly a tangent, it relates to the same thing. He merely got pissed off because the history of his language was in question by which he errored on.

You're not singling me out? All of your responses relate to me poking and prodding about a translation. Interesting you don't extend that same courtesy on him.

Speaking of deleting, interesting how I respond to this topic a few days later, 2 minutes later, you pop up..immediately with a response. Scary. 8O
