I know it's a little bit early to start a hockey thread, but the Canucks just released their 2008/09 schedule. Hopefully the team will go a bit farther this year...

I'll have to see the new roster before I could comment on the new players being signed up, the thing that really pisses me off though is the team not resigning Brendan Morrison.

Damn, check the schedule, two what really work out to be eight game road trips, one seven gamer, along with a six game road trip to start the season...

Well, points for optimism anyways. All the pundits say they'll suck this year, but when you think about it, they'll have a hard time sucking more than last year, where we were supposed to make the playoffs and nose-dived in the final stretch, to mix metaphors.

Canucks to honour Bourdon prior to home opener

The Vancouver Canucks announced today that they will honour the memory of former Canucks defenceman Luc Bourdon on October 9, 2008 prior to the Canucks home opener.

"Luc was an important part of our Canucks family. We want to make sure that everyone who Luc touched has the opportunity to celebrate his life and memory," said Chris Zimmerman, President and CEO, Canucks Sports & Entertainment. "Luc was a special person in so many ways. He brought great spirit and determination to all that that he did on-ice or off. His passion for our game was always present whenever he was with fans, team personnel or helping in the community. Luc will be forever a Canuck."

The Canucks are asking fans to join the team prior to the 7:30pm puck drop for a pre-game ceremony that will include a video tribute to the late Bourdon and a moment of silence. As fans arrive, they will be presented with a commemorative pin in honour of Bourdon.

The organization will continue to remember Bourdon throughout the season with an element added to each player's helmet. Hosts at General Motors Place will also continue to wear the commemorative pin for all 41 regular season home games in 2008-09.

It's here....hockey season..... Okay, it's the pre-season....but it's still HOCKEY!!

GAME PREVIEW from canucks.com

After two hard days at Whistler, the Vancouver Canucks kick off their pre-season against the Oilers in Edmonton.

The Canucks are expected to start 2004 first round pick, Cory Schneider in net with Karl Goehring working backup duty.

Schneider understands that he's in a bit of a unique situation because even if he plays a perfect game and performs well all pre-season, he will most likely be re-assigned to Manitoba because the pairing of Roberto Luongo and Curtis Sanford are all but sharpied into the opening night roster.

"You just try to prepare yourself and you always hope for a good game, but whatever happens, happens," said Schneider. "It's out of my hands so all I can do is go out there and control what I can and that's playing a good game. If I do that, hopefully I force them to make a decision, but it's up to them and if they feel it's best for me to play more games (in Manitoba) then that's fine."

For one of the rare times in their careers, Daniel and Henrik Sedin will not play on the same line together and in fact, they're not even on the same team. Daniel will make the trip to Edmonton, while brother, Henrik, will stay in Vancouver and dress for their home game at GM Place.

Vancouver is dressing the more experienced of the two teams from training camp, with just one player on this roster without any pro hockey experience in Dan Gendur, who was a standout at rookie camp and the game in the rookie tournament against Edmonton and Calgary.

Leading the team will be Mattias Ohlund and Willie Mitchell on the blueline, who have both been two of the most consistent players for the Canucks.

6:00 PM on RSP and Team 1040
