Anyone listen to "After 40 Minutes" on last Saturday's Habs-Leafs game...???

There was a remark if GM continues to fail the Red Wings maybe no more? Did I hear this correctly?

ESPN's Pierre Lebrun appeared on the Satellite Hotstove on Hockey Night in Canada on Saturday night, and LeBrun states (at the 5:08 mark of the November 8th clip) that Red Wings GM Ken Holland has met with Henrik Zetterberg's agent, Mark Levine about ten days ago, they've spoken over the phone and will do so again, and they're discussing the "nitty gritty" of the contract. LeBrun says that the counter-proposals include 8-9-10 deals between in the $7-8 million range.

Immediately after LeBrun's comment, Al Strachan also makes a ridiculous claim, via a "source," that if General Motors goes bankrupt in the next year, "The Red Wings won't last another year after that, because Detroit will be such a ghost town, so they can have a Zetterberg deal, but they won't be playing in Detroit."

Just under 5.5 million people live in the Metro Detroit combined statistical area, and Olympia Entertainment is a corporate empire unto itself, so Detroit won't become a "ghost town" if GM or Chrysler go bankrupt.

I can't see Detroit becoming a ghost town, but it's economy could definitely be impacted severely, causing a drop in attendance. Still, I think Hockeytown will fare better than Atlanta or Columbus.

Hockey is in Detroit's blood.

I was under the impression that Columbus was still one of the struggling franchises (Floirda, Tampa, Atlanta, Nashville, etc). If it's in the black, then I stand corrected. I still think that Detroit will be fine, even if their attendance dips. It's not called Hockeytown for nothing.

However I saw last week that houses in Detroit were selling for $18,500 in some areas. Ghost town or not it's not a happy place to live right now.

I'm not sure if it's a good or bad thing.

It's bad because it might cause other hockey teams to go bankrupt.

but it's also good because Detroit might be transfered to Quebec city, that had it's team stolen in 1995, or to Winnipeg that lost theirs in 1996.

The Red Wings are one of the Original Six and won't be going anywhere any time soon.

Strachan is a flake.

That said, I wouldn't mind seeing the Red Wings go belly up if it would improve the chances of getting another team or two or three to relocate to Canada.

Let's see in the past few years Ottawa, Buffalo and Pittsburgh have all gone bankrupt. Phoenix this year has received assistance from the NHL. Tampa went through some rough waters and it doesn't appear as though Nashville, Florida or Columbus are off of the critical status list.

Maybe when a billionaire steps up and wants to buy a team Bettman should let them buy the team!!!

lol Detroit's a good hockey town, but not as good as Winnipeg, Hamilton or Quebec City would be.
