Well, my boys are no where to be seen on this list after loosing two games this weekend to the #1 ranked Spruce Grove Saints.... :evil:

CJHL ANNOUNCES WEEKLY RANKINGS

The Canadian Junior Hockey League (CJHL) announced today its Weekly Top 20 rankings in conjunction with NHL Central Scouting. Last week's rankings and the leagues in which the teams belong to are in parenthesis.

The CJHL Weekly Top 20 as of Monday, January 10, 2011:

3. (1) Powell River Kings (BCHL)
4. (10) Fort McMurray Oil Barons (AJHL)

The rankings are based upon a variety of factors which includes the league in which the teams belong to, their winning percentage, their win-loss record, total points accumulated, their goals-for versus goals-against ratio, amongst other factors.

The CJHL is an amalgamation of the ten Junior A hockey leagues from across Canada.

What was the lead from the Grande Prairie Storm 2-1 overtime win over the Drayton Valley Thunder in the Canada Games Arena on Tuesday night?

Was it RJay Berra’s first goal as a Storm?

How about Mitch Neumeier’s nifty OT winner?

Andy Williams rebounding to make some big saves after letting in a softie in the first?

Or the fact the Thunder continue to give the Storm fits?

In the end the only thing that really mattered is the Storm picked up two points and gained a point on the Lloydminster Bobcats in the fight for fourth place in the North Division of the Alberta Junior Hockey League. The Bobcats, who have played two more games than the Storm, lost 4-3 to the Spruce Grove Saints in overtime Tuesday. The Storm now trail the Bobcats by two.

Berra, who was traded to the Storm by the Prince George Spruce Kings on Monday for Ben Woodley and Dustin Beairsto, travelled to the Swan City earlier in the day Tuesday and saw his new teammates for the first time just a few hours before the 7 p.m. game start.

His goal came at 18:48 of the second period and tied the game at 1-1.

He picked up a loose puck after a couple of Drayton Valley defenders had collided and lifted a high shot past Thunder netminder Zach Weissebach.

“RJay came as advertised – he’s a goal scorer,” said Storm coach/general manager Mike Vandekamp. “He adds that dynamic.”

Berra (celebrating his goal in photo above) was paired with Dan Correale and Tanner Fritz. The trio had lots of offensive end domination, but often got caught passing when shooting appeared a more logical choice.

“We were guilty of being too cute,” said Vandekamp of the fact it appeared Berra’s teammates were looking for him a little too much instead of firing the puck at the Drayton Valley net and taking their chances on a dirty goal.

Austin McKay of the Thunder got himself a bit of a greasy one at 5:26 of the first period firing a 25-footer through Williams to put Drayton Valley ahead 1-0.

Williams made up for that faux pas in the second making some nice stops as the Storm were outshot 15-9 and was especially greedy in OT when he made three saves including shutting the door on a dangerous two-on-one.

“He made a nice save in OT,” said Vandekamp of his veteran netminder, who has struggled somewhat of late sharing the duties with rookie Colin Dzijacky. “Our intention is to play the heck out of him. He’s got to find his game.”

The big save allowed the game to continue and Neumeier to do his thing.

During the three-on-three OT he split the Thunder defence and went in alone to fire a backhander past the Drayton Valley netminder.

It was his 16th goal of the season and his second game winner.

Tuesday also marked the debut of defenceman Derek Henderson, who was also acquired from the Spruce Kings at the trade deadline Monday. He was steady.

“He looks like he’s going to be a good, reliable defenceman,” Vandekamp said of Henderson. “I can’t complain about the way the new guys played. I think they’re going to be good additions.”

Williams ended up looking at 27 shots while the Storm fired 42 at Weissbach.

There were just six minor penalties called in the game with each team getting two powerplays.

The Storm and Fran Gow-coached Thunder have played five times this year and the Storm have won every game, but they have all been close including a 3-2 shootout win and other wins of 3-2, 3-1 and 5-3 in regulation time.

The Storm now head to Spruce Grove to take on the Saints on Friday before returning home for four in five nights next week – Bonnyville Pontiacs Tuesday and Wednesday; the Canmore Eagles Friday and the Calgary Canucks on Saturday.

Friday is Paint The Town Red Night and the Storm will be wearing special red jerseys that will be auctioned off with the proceeds going to the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Saturday is Ernie’s Sports Experts Teddy Bear Toss night.

A great game in Grande Prairie tonight!!!

In what was probably the best all around game we've watched this season,
The Storm and their division rivals,
the Bonnyville Pontiac's really went toe to toe tonight.
These two teams are very evenly matched and the play sure showed it tonight with a solid,
well disciplined, hard fought contest.

In the second game of the double header against Bonnyville, the Storm and their division rivals didn't disappoint. In another very evenly played and hard fought game, the two teams stood toe to toe and and gave each other their best efforts. Again the game was very physical with big hit after big hit being thrown all night long. The edge in the hitting did have to go to the Storm and by the end of the second period, the Pontiacs couldn't touch the puck without looking up to see a Storm player bearing down on them with every intention of hitting them into the middle of next week. That did prove to be the difference in the game as the Storm edged the Pontiacs by the same score as Tuesdays game, 3-2.

Tomorrow night, the boys will dress in red and white uniforms for the annual Heart and Stroke foundation game. I'm going to be trying to win one of the Storm jersey auctions as I did for the Cancer Society game earlier this year. The jerseys look pretty cool.

Another great game in Grande Prairie tonight!!!

The annual Heart and Stroke Foundation game was tonight where the Storm wore Red and White jerseys with the Heart and Stroke Foundation logo on the chest. The jerseys were designed by Grande Prairie Storm net minder Colin Dzijacky who is from Thunder Bay Ontario. I actually got into a bidding war with Colin's mother for his jersey, until I realized who I was bidding against that is and stopped. As we were waiting to pay for the auctions, we had a great conversation, such a nice lady. I did get Rosie's cousins Jersey, #15 Taylor Cote so that was cool. Such a great event and not only that, but there was a hockey game going on too.... :lol: The Storm had a great game as they hosted the Canmore Eagles. They played great and came away with another well earned victory.

Quite an interesting night in Grande Praire last night.
First off, the Storm were taking on the Canucks from Calgary and this was the annual Teddy Bear toss game where right after the first goal scored by the Storm all the fans who brought Teddy Bears to the game throw them on the ice. The bears all go to the sick children at the QEII hospital here in Grande Praire.

But before the game, the Storm held a rather unusual, and in my opinion very classy, farwell to the coach of the Calgary Canucks. The Storm saluted the long time head coach of the Calgary Canucks, Don Phelps, who is retiring from coaching after 26 seasons as the Canucks bench boss. Here is a quote from the Storm website.

Before the game in the Canada Games Arena, the Grande Prairie Storm saluted Calgary Canucks coach Don Phelps who is retiring at the end of the Albert Junior Hockey League season.

Phelps has been involved in hockey for 40 years and including 26 with the Canucks, and fortunately for him, there haven’t been many nights like he experienced Saturday.

The Storm bid farewell to Phelps, who won the Canadian Junior A championship in 1994 with the Canucks, with one of the most lopsided losses in games between the two teams since the Storm joined the AJHL in 1996.

Phelps was making his last visit to Grande Prairie and he received a very nice ovation from the Storm fans honoring his years of dedication to the AJHL.

On top of the other events going on, Melody Davidson, the Canadian Woman's Hockey team's head coach, helped out on the Calgary bench as a guest head coach. She is in GP putting on a coaching clinic this weekend.

Now to the game. It only took 1:49 before the Teddy Bears were raining down on the ice as Dominic Savoie scored the first goal of the game.


The game was never really in doubt after that. The closest the Canucks would get was 4-2 as the Storm dominated them in all aspects of the game. This win gave the Storm a 4-0 record in this four game home stand. It puts them 4 points up on Lloydminster for 4th place with two games in hand and only two points back of Bonnyville for third in the very tough northern division.
