Post subject:  Canada's forgotten team......

Just a little update on a Team Canada that isn't getting very much exposure. The Spengler Cup, a long time Christmas season tradition in Switzerland, is being played and Canada is in the Semi final game. This is the 84th annual Spengler Cup making it one of the oldest international tournaments still being played.

Mark Messier is the Team Canada coach this year and they had a thriller of a game against Sparta Prag in the quarter finals. It took overtime for Canada to advance to the Semi Finals against HC Davos today.

This is a pretty good tournament to watch, lots of former NHL players playing in Europe and these are some of the best club teams in Europe competing. The one thing that always gets me is just how into the game the fans in Switzerland are. No matter who is playing, they sing and cheer and pack the arena in Davos for every single game.

Sorry, the Spengler Cup routinely loses to the WJHC. I just don't care about old has-beens when I can watch new stars strut their stuff.

Hu, you watch the Leafs though...

I wouldn't pass up watching Canada play at the world juniors over a Spengler game, but at 7 am today, there wasn't any WJ games on and the Spengler games are actually pretty decent hockey. It's just nice to see another level of hockey where we compete and usually do pretty well. I just think it's cool to see other leagues and tournaments outside of North America. The fans there seem to be just as passionate about their teams as we do here.

How does that thing work? It's be invitation only, or something. Wouldn't mind watching a game. Juniors is boring right now. Watching that game against Norway--it's like watching a small animal get tortured.

With Phil Kessel, Dion Phaneuf, Kris Versteeg and Luke Schenn. Yup. Maaaaaaybe Nazem Kadri, although that boy needs to bulk up. He gets knocked off the puck too easily.

You raise a good point. It's nice to see other countries promoting hockey that doesn't involve Canada taking a lead role.

The Spengler Cup might not be as well known as the World Juniors but the annual late December competition is the oldest international hockey tournament.

Ask most hockey fans to name a Christmas-time international hockey tournament and the likely answer will be the World Junior Hockey Championship. But while the world’s best under-20 hockey players battle it out for international supremacy, another more established group of players are doing the same in Davos, Switzerland.

Held every year from Dec. 26-31 and hosted by Swiss League hockey team HC Davos, the Spengler Cup features five clubs, including the hosts, playing each other once in a round-robin tournament. The top two ranked squads then meet in the final to determine the champion.

Teams participating in the annual event are there by invitation only, as selected by the Spengler Cup Organizing Committee. Most are clubs from various European leagues, with the exception of a Team Canada or Team USA squad made up of players plying their trade overseas or occasionally in North American minor hockey leagues.

I haven't forgotten the Spengler Cup, but after five minutes of watching players decked out like Nascars with a million different advertisers, I just can't stand it anymore.

Sometimes I wonder how long it will be before the team logos are replaced with sponsor logos (they are already surrounded by them)...and each guy can have a sponsor's name instead of his own.

Nissan passes it to Jofa, Jofa shoots it right past UBS Bank. Jofa Scores!

No matter what the tournament, no matter what level of hockey it is, no matter how much advertising is on the uniforms, these guys are still from Canada. They are there representing our country at this level of sport and are just as proud to be donning the Maple Leaf as any other Canadian would be. ..GO CANADA GO!!..

Must be the football club from the Carlsberg, Denmarkll, right? But no, look at the tiny little logo in the top right--it's Liverpool FC!
