Manifesto backed by prominent NDPers calls for overhaul of capitalist economy

OTTAWA — Just as Tom Mulcair attempts to convince Canadians that the NDP is a safe, moderate choice in the Oct. 19 election, some of his party's highest profile supporters are issuing a manifesto calling for a radical restructuring of the country's economy.

The "leap manifesto," signed by more than 100 actors, musicians, labour unions, aboriginal leaders, environmentalists and other activists, aims to pressure the next federal government to wean Canada entirely off fossil fuels in as little as 20 years and, in the process, upend the capitalist system on which the economy is based.

The drivers of the manifesto are best-selling author Naomi Klein and her husband Avi Lewis. It echoes the theme of Klein's latest book: "This Changes Everything: Capitalism vs. the Climate," which was turned into a documentary of the same name, directed by Lewis.

Today's release of the manifesto coincides with the debut of the documentary over the weekend at the Toronto International Film Festival.

"Upends Capitalism" simply by the elimination of Fossil Fuel use?

I'm calling Shens.

Sounds great but I wonder what they are using to operate the myriad of vehicles the city owns and operates? [huh]

I'm betting it's some form of fossil fuel, thus they are NOT using 100% of renewable energy sources.

Probably some natural gas for heating too. But everything begins with small steps!

First get the infrastructure off fossil fuels, then the vehicle fleet . . . eventually others will see it's possible and perhaps even cheaper!

This is not exactly true. They're paying a premium for power sourced from the national power grid and they really have no practical way to say that the power that gets put on the grid in Ohio is the same power they use in Colorado.

It's like how Portland buys water from the Columbia River but someone in Idaho who sells them water is not actually selling that specifically sourced water. The rights just mean that Portland can pump that equivalent of water most of which probably came from Canada.

Same with the electricity.

Then it's not 100%, thus the article is a lie.

If the power they use equals the power generated from renewable resources, it's true.

The article is incorrect. It should say 100% of 'electricity', not 'energy', as that's what the article actually says. I don't write them, I just reference them. Don't even get me started on the modern news 'Editor' and how most of them can't spell or understand grammar.

But the sentiment is still true. We can change the way we live, if there is a will to do so. The problem has always been seen as the solution needs to fit into the current infrastructure. And renewable electricity does just that. It's now just a matter of scale.

We'll always need oil and gas, because so much of modern society is based on petrochemicals that produce things we can't get anywhere else. But we don't have to burn them for transport or to stay warm anymore.

And, I don't see where this 'Manifesto' is so very controversial. It's pretty much what the Green Party has been saying for years.

Yep, an agenda pushed and supported by the kind of rich people who, due to the amount of money they have, are never going to suffer at all from the consequences of what they want to implement. That's the thing about the wealthy, whether it's the Arab billionaires that deliberately destroyed an entire industry just because they could or the Wall Street ones who's silly frat-boy games cost millions of people their homes to the left-wing Hollywood ones who live in such an insulated bubble of sheer fantasy that they have no idea at all what trying to make it in the real world is like. The only hallmark, the only real legacy, of the rich is that with everything they do they create suffering for everyone else. It's always been that way and always will be.

where are all the NDP 'moderates'? why are they not chiming in here? Are they secretly supporting this kind of BS? Interesting they all run away when faced with facts.

The cogen plant here will soon fire up, and they're actually discussing wind power on the mountaintop I suggested over a decade ago.
Must really hurt when the lefties know it can and will happen if you're a typical CAN'Tservative.

Anyone who thought that Linda McQuaig was speaking out of turn or bungled the daily talking points is an absolute fool. What she said was what the entirety of the rest of them, in the federal party anyway, firmly believe. And want to happen. It's all a foreshadowing of what they will set to doing if they ever gain national power.

I am not against alternative energy, but I do get upset when special interest groups yell and scream about 100 birds dying in a tailing pond when 10's of thousands of birds are carved up yearly in wind turbines.

There is also a significant amount of detachment to the cause I think, ask protesters how they got to the protest site? they took a vehicle, they wear clothes, they need heat in the their homes in the winter etc. It isn't as easy as lets turn a switch and everything is perfect with our alternative energy sources.

Without access to cheap energy sources humans will devastate the planet, and I mean utterly devastate it. All we need to do is look at Haiti vs. the Dominican Republic.

Solar is one of the 'dirtiest' industries when it comes to their construction and add that they are only 8 to 10% efficient it really means neither wind nor solar are viable alternatives. Unfortunately you can't get energy for nothing and a barrel of oil has the most bang for the buck, I know it isn't clean and we do need to find other cleaner sources but it won't happen any time soon.

Fusion, I bet in my lifetime we will see cold fusion, then there will be an end to this madness of burning coal for power generation. That is the #1 source of air pollutants, and it would only take a small number of fusion reactors to power the western world.

So unless you don't want heat in the winter (because methane is reasonable clean burning and most of Canada is heated by natural gas and a good chunk of the US now), and you don't want to be mobile then oil isn't going anywhere anytime soon.
