Somebody had to win it, just too bad that the Esks couldn't get off to a faster start.

Was very impressed with the injury-plagued Ti-Cat D - those rookies were solid last night - though they still take a few too many penalties.

Nice to see the Cats get their ground game going - really helped Hank out last night.

Mike Reilly can't keep putting himself in harm's way - I know he has heart and passion but you gotta stay healthy Mike. Still he impressed me a lot with his determination to keep coming back, hit after hit. His ability to make the next play was inspiring.

The Esks need to establish a ground game. Get those early yards on the rush to give the QB a chance. They are great at coming from behind but this is two weeks in a row where they came up just short in the final secs.

Nice win by the Cats. Really liked how Austin designed the plays where LeFevour would come in for a couple plays - obvious from Hank's grin on the sidelines that this had been in the playbook for the game.

Much less impressed with Reed's clumsy handling of the same move when w/o bothering to tell Mike, he yanks him and puts Crompton in - crappy way to treat you starter. Kudos to Mike for brushing it off and still giving it his all.

A win by the least inept of the two teams who played some of the worst football I've seen in years. The whole game could be summarized by one play, the Lions, up by 7 points, try to nail the Bombers deep in their zone with about a minute left in the game. McCallum shanks the punt and when it's all over and done with the punt gains a total of -7 yards, leaving the Bombers with great field position, but they blow it and the Lions win it 27-20.......

Agreed, Hyack. I was expecting a much better game from the Lions but it was a mediocre effort at best. Did see some improvement in the Bomber D over last week but any team that has Tim Burke as a coach is handicapped to begin with. Never been a fan of Timmie's but his sideline antics are getting old. He needs to suck it up and act like a grown-up.......maybe then we will see the Bombers start winning games.

And once again, the refs help decide the outcome with a couple of really bad calls.

Montreal plays host to the Argos tonight in their first game of the season under new HC Jim Popp. The team will be w/o two of their top assets for the game - Jamal Richardson is out for the season with an ACL and LCL injury to his knee and Brandon Whitaker has yet to recover from a shoulder injury suffered in the game against Edmonton.

Meanwhile, Ricky will be back behind center for the Argos tonight.

I'm going with the Argos as I think it will take a bit more time for Montreal to come up to par though I do expect to see Tony once again provided with decent protection.

Calgary 42 to 27

Jon Cornish ran for well over 100 yards and scored 4 TDs for the Stamps tonight proving once again how capable he is of finding holes and eating up the yards. Mind you, he also drew a penalty for objectionable conduct when he took his last TD ball and dropped it at the feet of Dwight Anderson and the ref standing beside him. Kudos to Rene for extending his streak to 36 consecutive FGs.

Calgary owned the first half - Sask could not stop their offence and they couldn't mount one of their own. Sask improved in the 2nd but not enough to overcome Calgary's lead. Calgary deserved the win but they did get a bit of help from the Riders.

Sask looked almost hesitant at times in the first half and DD had more pressure than in past games and was sacked twice. The D was almost completely unable to contain Jon nor could they get to Kevin Glenn.

One thing I do give them credit for is George Cortez' ability to make adjustments at the half. Sask played a much better game in the 3rd and 4th quarters. The D was able to limit Jon Cornish until late in the 4th when the game was already in Calgary's hands. The offense came alive and Darian completed some beauty passes to Taj, Geroy, Getz and others.

Another deciding factor in the game was Sanders decision to run the ball out instead of taking a knee in the end zone for a single point. That decison alone led to Sask giving up 2 when DD was sacked in the end zone. Mind you, Jock came back in the 4th to score a TD off a beaut sideline pass albeit in a losing cause. He needs to be told exactly what he is to do on those deep punts and he has been guilty of making the same decision in at least one other game.

Though Kory was very effectively shut down in the first half as is his wont he came back in the 2nd and once again ran for over 100 yards - his 6th consecutive 100+ game. Nice going Kory but the Riders have to get you going earlier in the game.

Chris Getzlaf was good for 2 TDs. Taj Smith caught a couple of beaut passes. Geroy got us an important 1rst D. Weston got some touches. John Chick got a sack on Kevin. Dwight Anderson made Jon's life hard in the 2nd half. Rob Baggs set us up in TD territory. Chris Milo is 14 for 14 on the season adding 2 more FGs to his record tonight.

If DD's ankle was bothering him, it didn't slow him down much when he took off on a few plays - one for a 14 yard gain putting them well inside the red zone. I didn't think he was as precise on some of his passes - he definitely overthrew his receivers on a few occasions tonight. DD was 20 of 32 for 279, 2 TDs and 0 interceptions. We also had our first offensive fumble of the season leading to a Calgary major when Kory fumbled the ball deep in Rider territory, a Calgary player was the last to touch the ball before it went out-of-bounds.

I am not as upset about losing the game as I am about the reasons behind the loss. Total break-down in discipline was, IMO, a major factor in the loss. However, losing to Calgary, as good as they were tonight is far better than losing to a much lesser team.

Sask and Calgary are now tied in the standings at top spot in the West.

Montreal Alouettes sign former Heisman Trophy Winner Troy Smith

The Montreal Alouettes are no doubt hoping quarterback Troy Smith has more success in the CFL than the last three Heisman Trophy winners who ventured north of the border.

The Alouettes signed Smith, who won the Heisman with Ohio State University in 2006, to a two-year contract Wednesday.

"We welcome Troy to the Alouettes," Montreal general manager/coach Jim Popp said.

"We've been in discussions together for well over three months and have been patiently waiting for Troy to finish his commitments at Ohio State. We'll have to fast track Troy in order to get him over the learning curve of the CFL and caught up to speed over the next several weeks. He's here to learn and grasp the game for future competition.”

The one-time NFLer -- he spent three seasons with the Baltimore Ravens and one with the San Francisco 49ers -- has bounced around in the three years since. He last played for the Omaha Nighthawks of the UFL but was on the Pittsburgh Steelers' roster for six months during the winter of 2012.

Former Heisman winners haven't had much luck in the CFL since Doug Flutie returned to the NFL. Andre Ware, Ricky Williams and Eric Crouch -- all of whom played with the Argos at one time -- had little impact during their brief CFL careers.

It will take awhile for the Als to bring Troy up to speed but this is definitely a step in the right direction for the team.........Tony isn't going to be around forever.

I give full credit to Winnipeg Blue Bomber fans who in spite of a dismal season thus far have still continue to pack their wonderful new stadium in support of their lagging team. Last night they came just over a 1000 short of a full house. Rock on Bomber fans - keep the faith folks. Doing so just got a bit harder last night after they watched their team lose yet another home game this time to the Hamilton Ti-Cats.

In a week that saw the Bomber's cleaning house in the head office and naming yet another #1 starter for pivot in the person of Max Hall, the turmoil continued. The Bombers were all but ineffective against the strong arm of Hank and the capable hands of his receivers. By the half, the Ti-Cats led 17 to 7 and would not surrender their lead the rest of the night.

Max managed to engineer one great TD drive but an outstanding 96 yard run by Aaron Woods for another was wiped off the slate due to 2 penalties assessed against the team on the play. Throughout 3 quarters of play the Bombers managed to rack up over 100 yards of penalties. Ian Wild would finally put another on the board for Winnipeg after Bakari Grant mishandled the ball which Wild recovered and took 54 yards to the end zone. One bright note for the Bombers was the play of Terrence Edwards who came through for Max on play after play. On one of the most elegant plays of the night, Edwards took the ball to the 45 managed to escape his tackle and run all the way to the Hamilton 11 yard line - it was fabulous 2nd effort by the veteran receiver who had 8 catches for 172 yards - his best outing of the season.

Orlando Steinauer's young defence played perhaps their best game of the season so far harrying and rushing Max play after play. They had 2 interceptions on the night and forced another TO on a Winnipeg 3rd down attempt. Smilin Hank threw for 333 yards, was good on 22 of 36 passes for a TD and 0 interceptions. Greg Ellingson was a Monster for the Ti-Cats and Hank's go-to guy in tight situations. Andy's return was a bit wobbly at first but he came through for the Cats with 10 touches for 155 yards. Hamilton was not w/o it's own break-down in discipline but they were able to overcome penalties winning the game 37 - 18.

I expect to see yet more changes in the Winnipeg team this week after the team fell to 1 and 6 on the season.

Only problem with the BC jersey is what someone else pointed out, hard as hell to see those numbers from a distance.
