Post subject:  Help! Engine won't shut off with key

Alright, here is the deal. I have a '98 Pontiac Grand Prix GT. The battery went dead and had to be boosted, has since been replaced. The car runs great, everything works the way it should.... however, when you shut the car off, take the key out of the ignition, the engine keeps running. This is not dieseling/running on, it is running just as if the key were still in it in the run position with the exception accessories (radio, headlights, etc.). In order to shut off the engine, must pop hood, pull fuel pump fuse. Then, because marker lights and dash lights are still on, batter must be disconnected. A new altenator has been installed (after this problem occured), replaced the ignition switch. No codes pulled from computer with OBDII code reader (yes, I know the codes will be erased when the battery is disconnected....so I should say, no new codes or MIL codes from code reader after car has been run for a while (several hours, local roads and highway) and battery not disconnected.

Anyhow, I can't find any burnt wires, blown fuses or relays. Maybe I am missing something here.

If anyone can provide some help... that would be appreciated. It's a real pain having to pop the hood to shut off the car. And it is no fun to come back out to the car from a store and have a cop sitting beside your car watching it for you because you left it running. Afraid it will be stolen. Hey, go ahead, see how far you get without the keys...besides LOL, you want it, take it...please! LOL

My guess would be a stuck main relay, but you said all are good.
This shouldn't be too tough to troubleshoot with a wiring diagram.

I've seen the same problem after a boost. Can't remember what got fried, but it happened after hooking up the battery the wrong way. Polarity was backwards when boosted and when it was boosted right the car ran on after it was shut off. There was a remote car starter installed and I think it was also disconnected after that as well. That may have been the only thing done to fix the problem........I can't remember though.

A lot of newer cars have a real problem with being boosted. Most tow truck drivers and such all carry surge protectors so they don't fry the computer. I'll go through my tech manuals and see what gets toasted with boosting

Just though of something....... check the ignition switch pigtail.

Other thing I need to know is if you have distributorless ignition and what engine you have? Also if you could get me the 8th digit of your vin code.

Do you have a remote starter in your car?

Yes, distributorless ignition. 1998 Grand Prix GT 3.8L non supercharged. Ignition switch was already replaced, did not fix problem. Eigth digit of vin is the letter K. There is NO remote car starter and no aftermarket alarm installed, factory alarm only, and it is currently disabled. Factory alarm was disabled prior to this mishap.

Thats just bizarre obviously your key starts the car but won't block fuel when you shut it off so I don't see it being your key ignition but would agree your remote may have something if not everything to do with it .

Go inside, put your steel-toed boots on, then come out and bootfuck that thing until it shuts down. It's the only thing they understand.
