EyeBrock EyeBrock: Time to Remember? This is on my gallery but I'm more competent with HDR than I was a year ago and this is toned down. From the National Memorial in Ottawa. I've noticed one thing, maybe that's just mine meaning but on all west monuments soldiers are described being relaxed, on Soviet Union monuments, the herous are always strained. |

Well, these statues were made just after the killing fields of World War One. The public who saw them for the first time all had somebody they lost and knew that there was no glory in war. I think the Commonwealth style of the era was more of mourning and remembrance than glory. Here's a plaque that I always noticed as a child an on. It's simple and still there at Manchester Victoria Train Station. Everytime I saw it I thought about the thousands of young men, waving to loved ones on the platform as the troop train took them closer to the Western Front. Most of them would never return.

The Soviet monuments look like they are going for the glory. |
