With the Germans gone, a great weight is lifted from the other teams. Anyone can win: Switzerland, why not? Hell, even ENGLAND could do it!

But England, if you do win, please promise not to go on and ON about it for fifty years like you did the last time, OK? Two wins would put you in the same company as Uruguay and we don't hear them crowing every week.

Ozil played fairly well. It was the lads up front who really screwed up.

Hard to know what to make of England's performance against Belgium. The back-up Belgians certainly looked good.

I wouldn’t read too much into it. It was a team that wasn’t interested in trying too hard.

For those who were wishing/hoping/predicting an eventual Messi/Ronaldo match-up...

...double whammy.

Indeed. Two of the global superstars of the game are out. Messi and Argentina were beaten by France as was expected but the score was a lot closer than I thought it would be.

And Uruguay best Portugal with a spirited team performance to knock out Cristiano Ronaldo.

Uruguay’s first goal was as good as it gets from two lads born a few weeks and streets apart. Cavani passes right across the pitch to Suarez who runs and then crosses it back and Cavani twists and basically faces it into the goal. Cavani’s second goal was lovely as well. He’s a scary looking guy, a bit like Jack Palance in Shane. Let’s hope his leg injury isn’t too serious. It’s an impressive series of team performances from a nation of less than 4 million.

France just ran Argentina off the park. They were too athletic for Messi and his fellow geezers. Any team will struggle to keep up with Mbappe who hit ten metres per second at one point. Fair play to the Argies for making a game of it.

What's the German word for "schadenfreude", again?

Confession time. At the Sunnyways community. we believe in full and open disclosure to the good people of CKA who deserve nothing less. Here goes (audible sigh at a photogenic angle - OMG that hair!!!).....I was actually ambivalent about the Uruguay win for ego reasons despite supporting Uruguay because I had been unexpectedly asked about the game beforehand and reluctantly predicted a Portugal win as opposed to my local (degenerate gambler) nemesis who went with Uruguay. Thus I found myself in the horrible position of supporting Uruguay but wanting to be proved right and wise about a Portugal win. Result was pain. The lesson, possums, is not to predict that your favoured team will lose.

Dear me, the Swe-Sui match had rather unsettling American commentary until 31:40 when an Englishman stepped in and normal service was resumed.

Neymar showcases everything right (skill) and wrong (ridiculous acting) with World Cup soccer.

More so he shows what is right & wrong with Brazilian soccer. I would even dare say he showcases what is wrong with many different nations internal programs.

When you are born and raised in a program where the slightest of touches will be called and penalized, it shouldn't be much of a shock when that mentality is carried over to the world stage. Don't be shocked when we are giggling about a Canadian player doing this, this is the direction our internal program is working towards.

Now if only Brazil could keep all of the skill development, and exorcise the over protective elements....granted, many believe that the two are mutually inclusive, so...never an easily identified right side to these things.
