Post subject:  The Olympics: and Baba Yaga is against

The Olympic Games invented by legendary Pierre Coubertin at once became the event not only of sports nature, but also of a political one. Moreover in the row of these political milestones the Olympic Games get the first place, and the post of President of MOC in worldwide politics ensures him to kick the doors of the offices of most prominent politicians as being equal to them.
And if speak about the discredit campaign of the Olympics in Sochi, we should directly state: although there are tiny, tiniest and even the most tiniest complaints, as well as more serious stings, for the last half of the century these Olympics are the least scandalous of any before. I claim this after thorough investigation of all boycotts and protests within the period of the Olympics.
So, the most important thing is not the steps which are tried and even are made in the virtual world, but those which are available in reality. Once in his time Hitler prepared for the Eastern front gargantuan cannons with heaviest shells – and what of it? The result was that these shells arching over some kilometers in the air with all their heaviness dug into swamps and didn’t even explode but smacked loudly without bringing any harm to the Red Army, but undermining finally the economics of the Third Reich.
Ill-wishers of Russia started to soften up the ground long before the Olympics in Sochi. The Americans used to be the initial campaigners – it was six years before the start. In 2008 the Congress of the USA appealed to change the place of the Olympics after “five-day war” in the Southern Ossetia. After it the former ambassador of USA in NATO Kurt Walker suggested imposing boycott of the Olympics in Sochi – at first diplomatic and then a sports one in order to bring the Southern Ossetia and Abkhazia back to Georgia. The violent rival of the games was controlled by Tbilisi so called “The International Circassian Association” appealing not to let the Olympics happen for the sake of Circassians. The result for these gentlemen is poor: the air journey “Tbilisi-Sochi” was restored to the start of the Olympics, and the Georgian national team proudly stalked under their flag. It should be stressed peculiarly – historically some countries claimed “half-boycott” (or on the contrary evaded the boycott) of the Olympics by letting their athletes to participate in the games personally but not under national, but Olympic flag, for example as Britain did for the Olympics in Moscow of 1980, Romania – for the next Olympics of 1984 in Los Angeles. Finally, the Georgian flag in Sochi is the best symbol for the utter failure of all projects to boycott the Russian Olympics.
Then the regular Western watchdogs came to action – poofters, lesbians and other perverts of all sorts. And they don’t lack energy – they don’t have children, family routine, money problems; in dance quick and wave your prick.
But the gay public was disappointed in a double manner. At first, it is not only indecent in Russia to defend, but also even justify perverts (and mostly just to mention this issue), and that’s why gay-protests fail to get any appeal (except negative, of course) in the country-host of the Olympics. But secondly – and this a laughing stock – the only gender-themed demonstration in Sochi was held, by no one but American guests, and not “for” but “against” gay-society, and this was the demonstration against homosexual marriages in some states.
Then there was a campaign of bogeyman stories about Sochi being allegedly not ready for the Olympics. It was perfectly organized, as if the Olympics itself. And it doesn’t matter that photos and legends were unmasked immediately after they had appeared – in the modern speedy world with fragment informational perception the refutation which is given apart of the false fact is rarely worth one’s attention. And you can change old Russian proverb “to wave fists after the fight” because false journalism makes meaningless waving of fists in the process of fight, as far as such gentlemen do not seek the fight at all; they hit secretly and flee as quick as possible. For example, the Austrian journalist took a photo of broken road in Vienna and twitted it with hash-tag “Sochi fails”. CNN rushed to get the photo, it was re-twitted 477 times. Some time later the journalist disclosed his fraud, but his refute was re-twitted only 4 times. But in modern reality with every second changing and within half an hour outdating informational field the millions of minds have the solid first “disclosure”.
As far as ill-wishers failed to organize boycott from countries – members of MOC (for winter Olympics where logically and traditionally participate athletes from countries with any, even the least, amount of snow the number of participants –both athletes and countries – is exceptionally high), they had to operate the ‘reduced’ variant of boycott. And it is the refusal of coming to Sochi from the first officials of countries. As far as the West doesn’t have real political claims to Putin’s regime (the claims of Russian citizens is a different question), Western politicians had to explain their refusal by standard issue – the same omnipresent poofters and lesbians who are allegedly humiliated in Russia by the state. Well, it is natural for heads of over-liberal Germany and France, but when the President of Moldova former judge Nikolay Timofty joined them he got a big laugh from his countrymen – to support openly sexual perverts in a rural and totally conservative country, where you can’t find ‘Playboy’ in news-stands (I haven’t seen it personally in Kishinev for the last eight years) - what can be worse for political image. I think he regretted it a thousand times that he had traded dubious solidarity with perverts for the possibility to watch the ball accompanied by the waltz of great Moldavian composer Evgeniy Doga. It seems it was the most fascinating event of opening of the games.
So what can rivals of the Olympics do with those leaders of states who came to Sochi to actively support their fellow countrymen? And they are in a majority. Then Western journalists committed what is categorically and vigorously prohibited by all rules of journalist ethics – direct and intentional forgery. They can’t present themselves journalists after it. Yes, a reporter can be wrong, he can by lulling his conscience leave something unsaid, but to substitute maliciously conspicuous truth by designed lies is something new in the arsenal of sports journalism. And sports journalists, I remind, have been always different from their political colleagues because they refused to lie (the Soviet ‘Pravda’ rarely published the truth, and everybody understood it, but ‘The Soviet Sport’ was out of such policy).
So, if foes failed to ‘weed out’ all necessary political leaders from the Olympics, the efficiently ‘weeded out’ those who are unnecessary. Although spectators at the arena could see the President of Ukraine in his box standing with flag when Ukrainian athletes were stalking around, TV viewers abroad could see an empty place. The Western TV companies could just miss him focusing on the sports delegation itself, but they had filmed an empty place in advance and put it miraculously into live broadcast. It is called forgery. American CNN viewers didn’t see that part of ceremony which was dedicated to the Soviet period - it was cut. And American TV-company NBC which had got the right to broadcast the Olympics, reduced the speech of President of MOC Thomas Bach, ‘’losing’ that part where he said about responsible and serious work made by the Russian side to prepare for the Olympics. According to Thomas Bach, Russia made the best Olympics, putting the whole soul into it. Later in his interviews he positively covered efforts and skills of Russian organizers, but these materials were not broadcasted at all. One can feel sorry for American viewers who must miss the ceremony of closing of the Winter Olympics. And I sincerely hope they can enjoy the spectacular show in the Internet, as NBC can’t do anything there.
Against all spiteful people the Olympics in Sochi goes perfectly, and national teams of those countries where politicians kept slandering proudly carry their flags and prove their leadership by new world records, not by phrase-mongering. The Olympics turned out well – it is the unanimous conclusion of most part of foreign mass media and rather biting Internet users.
And if so, these ‘slanderers’ put into action a plan ‘the better means worse’. “Only such countries as Russia and China can afford these magnificent shows, because no democracy can spend so much money” – wrote ‘USA today’.
And this issue seriously linked liberal western establishment with Russian ‘angry townspeople’. About 100 % of inner Russian criticism of the Olympics is connected with too high price and unseen scale of corruption at the process of construction.
The games itself allow to cover at least some of the expenses, but budget exceeding in comparison to the initial cost is not only the Russian peculiarity. In Lake Placid it was exceeded for 321 % (and Soviet athletes lived in …juvenile prison, as there was a shortage of hotels), in London the budget was exceeded for 101%.
But here we should note that major economic benefits of Winter Olympics for the country are not connected with the Games itself but with the construction of infrastructure. And if we can turn Sochi from second-rate sea resort, where they fleece the guests, into valuable year-round mountain and climatic resort, where Russian snowy Alps join a narrow subtropical shore of warm sea, it will mean that the goal is reached. The part of billions from legal and illegal rubles which flow to Egypt and Turkey and Thailand will stay at home.
As for those billions invested in Sochi I fully agree with people who say: it will be better to spend it on hospitals (schools, maternity homes, stadiums in yards, rise of pensions, etc.). Of course, it is better. But here is a hitch. The chances of investing this money into hospitals and pensions were really scarce. And the prospect of turning into London mansions, yachts at Cote d’Azur and other nice trifles was 100 % proof. Once the Patriarch Alexiy II answering the question: “Wouldn’t it be better to build a thousand small temples all over Russia instead of building gigantic Temple of Christ the Savior in the center of Moscow” gave a surprisingly fine answer: “Of course, it would be better. But people donate exactly for this Temple and it doesn’t mean that would donate for other temples”.

it`d be nicer if you could go into more detail, as this was far too cursory for most here.

Post subject:  Re: The Olympics: and Baba Yaga is against

"And Old Woman Yaga is against" is a Russian fixed phrase, meaning somebody who's determined to be critical and judgmental of smth no matter what. To take any effort: to lie, to twist the truth, to exaggerate etc. in order to bash smth. Extreme form of denial, bias, prejudice or hatred...

This article must have originally been penned in Russian as this phrase in its title is not understood in English when translated literally.

"Bitchy Witch" or "Mr. No" would have been better translations into English, but perhaps not carrying all of the nuances of meaning in the original.

P.S. "Old Woman Yaga" is an evil witch from Russian fairy tales who eats children. She's always against anything good because she's inherently evil. :-)
