Former swimming champion Alex Baumann, a 1984 Olympic double gold medalist for Canada, will leave Australia to head the Canadian Summer Olympic program: Road to Excellence, TSN's Brian Williams reported Tuesday.

While the report is yet to be confirmed, the Canadian Olympic Committee is expected to make the announcement official on Wednesday at a press conference scheduled for 11 a.m.

The Road to Excellence Business Plan was established to develop a vision and strategy for Canada to improve athletic results and performance at the upcoming 2008 and 2012 Summer Games.

The plan utilizes partnerships with governments, sports and associated organizations to achieve results that will allow Canada to perform on the world stage.

The plan is the first ever initiative that brings all summer sport organizations together with their sport partners to develop a fluid plan for success.

Baumann became the CEO of Queensland Swimming in 1999 and has been the executive director for the Queensland Academy of Sport since 2002.

In the 1984 Summer Olympics, Baumann took home two gold medals after winning both the 200m individual medley and the 400m individual medley.

After his gold medal victories, he released a book titled Swimming With Alex Baumann: A Program for Competitive and Recreational Swimmers.

In 2000, Baumann was passed over for leadership positions within Swimming Canada and the Canadian Olympic Association. The decision, based on Baumann's inadequate Canadian business background, was criticized by many who felt he was the right man for the job.
