Shouldn't the headline read:

Feds studying various types of prisons as way to save money.

$1:
Deloitte studied in detail 10 prisons in Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, Spain and Belgium -- providing an assessment and recommendation on each prison’s “relevancy to Canadian market” and their “relation to Correctional Services Canada.”

Some of those prisons in the Deloitte study were fully operated by private firms, while other institutions hired companies for basic services such as cleaning, laundry and food preparation services.

Public Safety Minister Vic Toews acknowledged he discussed the idea of private prisons with his British counterpart in a meeting in May, but said he ended up ruling it out.

Just another case of our unbiased media not letting a good headline get in the way of the actual truth.

But now onto more important things. WTF would you have to hire private firms for basic services such as cleaning, laundry, and food prep? Fuck the inmates, this isn't club med or Club Norway where you get room service and your meals served. If these societal misfits want to eat they should have to work and that includes keeping the insitutuions they call home nice and clean.

Ya gotta love the headline twist.

If a company can step in and do a good job while saving money, there's no issue here.

Yes there is damnit!

$1:
The modern private prison business first emerged and established itself publicly in 1984 when the Corrections Corporation of America (CCA) was awarded a contract to take over a facility in Hamilton County, Tennessee. This marked the first time that any government in the country had contracted out the complete operation of a jail to a private operator

And that relates to the topic of private jails how?

Support services are fine, but Prisons, no fucking way. I'm glad that has been ruled out.

I agree. The left-wingers however, can find an issue wherever one doesn't exist.

It's got nothing to do with left-right. Private businesses have profit motive. To sustain profit, business must expand. When you're talking about prisons, the only way to expand business is to incarcerate more people. That's what's happened in the USA. Unless these private operations are non-profit businesses, we shouldn't even consider this as an option. For-profit private prisons have been a colossal failure south of the border, so why would we want to make the same mistake? It's certainly not something "lefty" to look at the USA's experience as a case study and say "No thanks".

Hmmm...

Well, a government may not want to spend huge amounts of money on prisons because it's a money pit that may or may not assist with election results. The CPC has found out with their omnibus crime bill that spending that kind of coin does not raise them much in the polls.

A private company that looks after prisons needs prisoners to fund those prisons, hence, they may be in fact part of the lobby that makes things like say, pot, illegal. Reread Lemmy's post if you need to.

Of course, when a topic becomes too complicated for a deep thinker such as yourself to grasp, one could resort to standing in the middle of the room and shouting the leftie/rightie thing to drown out the adult conversation.

Privatizing public services and government functions has been a disaster everywhere it's been tried so I see no reason to support the privatization of prison management. Another completely ridiculous idea from the echo-chamber of American conservative "think" tanks where any real evidence contrary to their ideas is completely ignored in favour of advancing their bullshit ideologies.

My aren't we mature adults today? I expected more from you, Gunny. And someone who is a 'deep thinker' like you should have grasped that the post I made was in response to OTI, rather than yourself.

As for 'leftie/rightie'....I will call it on Curtman every single time.

So, you are now suffering from a moment of pique with my immature post calling you out on what was an immature post?

How about simply not joining in the partisan Hack Club of OTI/Curtman?

So if we have private companies supplying support services for prisons, what do we do with the prisoners.

Do they just sit around and twiddle their thumbs or maybe we could have everyone of them building CorCan furniture, flooding the market and putting the Chinese out of business. [cheer]

I just don't beleive that you can save money by having a company that must pay their employees at least minimum wage being as competetive as basically free prison labour.

If private companies could provide these services cheaper than inmate labour, we'd have seen it happening by now. My guess is that someone in Gov't's got a friend with a catering company that's struggling and this is a great way to get them solvent again.

Just watch the company that gets the trial contract will be from Ottawa and have ties to someone in Gov't which will come to light a couple of years after the trial. It's not like we haven't seen it before.

Ah...
An ounce of prevention...

Why are we focusing on the prison end of things again?

If we can't fund proper containment of our criminals, we best start re-evaluating our legal system. The last thing we should want is a self fulfilling prophecy a la Lemmy's description.

Don't expect much.

Coming from the head of the Grumpy Old Man Club, I wouldn't be too concerned. He's just showing his true colours. Agree with him or say something he doesn't like and the name calling starts.

Now sit back, and watch the name calling begin. The "deep thinker" will show us how it's done!
