Page was most likely at the very least influenced by the opening chords, if not outright copied. The main argument is that it is a common string which is found in many songs, I'm not sure I buy this. The release date of the song so soon after Taurus and the coincidences that they played on some of the same tickets is a lot to overlook.

They should have just settled this years ago with token million to the guy and a NDA or something, but they are notioriously protective of their music, while certainly in their first two albums (their weakest work in my opinion) they heavily borrowed, especially Plant without giving credit.

I recall reading an article in which Randy California basically said "yeah they stole it, but oh well". Another article when apparently Randy apparently gave his blessing to Page to use the intro, though none of this can be confirmed when they are online sources but it's what Ive seen.

I could list many examples of plagiarism, but also many cases in which the originals only really influenced them. For instance, "When the Levee Breaks" was an old classic by Memphis Minnie. If you listen to the original and compare it to the powerful version on Zeppelin IV, it's not even remotely comparable outside of the lyrics (Plant was too often lazy in his writing). Even songs like Whole Lotta Love which they were successfully sued on, gave credit to the wrong artist (Willie Dixon) when in reality Plant stole from Small Faces, Steve Marriott (the guy who I believe Plant tried to mimick early in his career). I imagine they would much rather give credit and pay an American Bluesman than face British lawsuits from Steve Marriott.

I think they got it wrong.

They shouldn't have to give writing credit as the song develops and become something much more than an opening sequence, but they should pay something to the estate for the "borrowing" that they are claiming didn't occur. I don't buy it that Page didn't hear it or become influenced by the opening. Of course, another argument is that if Randy California didn't seem fit to pursue the suit, why should his estate?

So many issues with the testimony that can't be reconciled. For instance, the fact that the song apparently came to fruition at Headley Grange and not Bron-Yr-Aur, which would have placed the timing sometime after rather than more recently after the Taurus song was released (presumably to suggest they weren't immediately influenced by the Taurus release).

Page may have introduced the song to the band for the first time at Headley, and worked on it as a unit, but its quite optimistic to think he hadn't already been working on the development of the then unnamed song earlier and completed the song at Headley . In fact, he has often spoke about the development of the song, both to the media in snippets and in interviews even before it was released or even finished.

The song itself and the case is chalked full of irony. Maybe with a word Page will get what he came for.

Here here. Stairway to Heaven is one of the greatest rock songs of all time, by one of the greatest rock bands of all time, and shouldn't have any strings attached, especially almost 40 years after the fact.

Zeppelin forever!

A plagiarizing, child-kidnapping rapist will be Jimmy Page's lasting legacy. Fuck him.

You like to defend thieves and child rapists, do you?

I used to love Zeppelin, 'til I learned a little about them.

Ironic that you state that while you have Gibson guitars as your avatar. Page made the Les Paul synonymous with his sound.

The Page/Maddox relationship is indefensible, so I won't try to defend it. From what I understand though is that he didn't know her age when he saw her at a club and sent Richard Cole to hook them up (Cole was involved in the "kidnapping"). In fairness, how could he know her age when she was in a bar drinking? Regardless, it's the one story of Zeppelin which is most offensive, and there are MANY stories which one could be offended by. No celebrity is without faults. Certainly, very few rock stars have lived angelic lives.

I wonder what you think of Peter Townsend, he is a much more concerning case...

Yes, there are many horrible stories about their past. Many musicians and bands who have shady pasts. Can you name any musician of significance who doesn't have some seriously messed up pasts?

Elvis? Johnny Cash? Jerry Lee Lewis? John Lennon? Michael Jackson?

Which of these top selling artists are without faults and errors? Furthermore, how many artists do you enjoy today who have done such offensive things that you have no idea they even engaged in?

Most just enjoy the music and separate the personal stories from the act, or else there we'd all be dancing the polka because there wouldn't be any musicians left.

Lots of folks play Les Pauls. I have 4. And I'm not nearly as sloppy a player as Page. 8)

What I think about Townshend is that he was investigated and cleared of any wrong doing. Either way, looking at shit on the internet is HARDLY "more concerning" than kidnapping and raping a kid.

I can let a lot of shit go. But with Page it's this and this and that. Too much. So fuck him.

I feel this way about most entertainers. I will pay you to entertain me. I don't give a rats ass about their personal life.

I am actually proud when I see some bit of news that this woman and that man are having some dispute, and I have no idea who they are. :)

I'm the total opposite.

I can't support an artist or entertainer if I don't like them/respect them off the stage.

I always use Kanye West as an example. I used to tolerate his earlier work but now, due to being an epic douche, I turn stations if his music comes on.
