I think that, even if you guys are correct about there not being a huge amount of inter-anglo trade, it will still make our resource pool larger. If both Australia and Canada work together to set prices for uranium higher, we both benefit. Same with the Kiwis selling milk, Scottish selling oil, English selling dentistry products, Welsh selling wool, Irish selling potatoes, etc. Rather than directly competing with each other, we work together to ensure we all benefit.

If the EU sees Ireland talking in a deal like that, they won't like it. They'll want in.
Aw Gee.. another 500 million to trade with who aren't starving beggars!

WTF? A trade deal with the EU is already on the books, just needs to be ratified. I'm not sure what you guys are on about, but it sounds like a pipe dream to me.

TPP won't be ratified, dead in the water now that Clinton said she is against it.

I don't know what this does to the EU trade deal. Thought it was nearly a done deal, but pretty silent about it lately.

I wouldn't be shocked to see a fairly large Commonwealth Free Trade deal in the near future.

Even without any formal trade deals, there is a pretty definitive 'Commonwealth Advantage'. Shame that that wasn't figured out until long after UK was in the EU and unable to negotiate independent trade deals.

We had something like that before the UK joined the EU, but I don't see much advantage in it now.

India might be a good market to seek broader access in, but we cannot do that unilaterally anyways. Besides, most other Commonwealth countries are already our competitors (either in natural resources or agricultural goods) or too poor to be good export markets.

And even if the UK proposed something like that, it's doubtful that many countries would participate due to national interest. Let's face it, the UK isn't the same market it was 60 or 70 years ago.

I think that he was referring to CETA.

How does CETA work when the UK isn't in the EU anymore? Has to be re-written and negotiated. Both deals are in the same boat, sinking.

I can see a U.S/U.K free deal in the future.

The people negotiating CETA have said that the UK is not the gateway to access to the EU. It was actually negotiated with France, for the most part and UK isn't really a part if it.

Now it definitely isn't a part of it.

41% of North American trade with the Continent is via ports in the UK. This is unlikely to change due to the proclivity of French dockworkers to go on strike for random reasons and because the ports in the Netherlands are at capacity as it is.

Like it or not, the UK will continue to be a factor in European trade regardless if Berlin or Paris likes it.

This is actually what has happened over the last four decades.

Deny it, of you can.
