More access to U.S and Japanese markets? This is a big deal, let's hope we are invited to the party if and when it gets signed...

So why do we need economic growth?

There is a correct answer.

Something something more stuff & things? There's still a couple of square inches of our souls that we haven't yet sold off to the highest (or lowest) bidder?

Japan and America are massive markets with currencies worth much more than our own, this is a great deal for Canada.

Yes, it's very important to get rid of trade barriers and give struggling American oil companies the opportunity to sell more of their product in Canada. It's the fair and nice thing to do after all.

How many of the petroleum companies in Canada are foreign owned? Many. Maybe you prefer they just pick up and invest elsewhere? Careful what you wish for.

Canada is an outlier of the G8. We have key sectors like automotive solely foreign owned. Maybe if we encouraged domestic freedoms and creativity we could compete. Instead, the holy grail of employment is government employment. We are a recipe for disaster, no amount of government intervention (and it is already extremely deep) will fix this. In fact, this intervention and centralized control and meddling are precisely why we are lagging, and it will only get worse.

More markets Canadian companies can sell to, but other countries will have access to our markets... so it's hard to see the plus side. To be good for Canada, we'll have to steal market share from companies in those countries.

Sure, some will say it's good for the consumer because there will be more competition for our money, but we know that doesn't always pan out.

All strong economies and businesses beat their competition. Whether Apple, IBM, Microsoft or Research in Motion (oops, scratch that last one). It is about the best businesses hiring the best workers and beating their competition. If Canada is at a disadvantage it is due to their own arrogance, nepotism and failed centralized economy. These trade deals will go forward without Canada, of this you can be sure.

The idea is that each country does what it's best at, so benefits by being the most competitive in that sector. It doesn't seem that Canada is really best at much besides selling our resources straight out of the box, and there's lots of other countries that can also do that, especially in a slowing world economy.

But free trade seems pretty well inevitable. I doubt we can make it if we isolate our economy. What is more worrying about these trade deals is how much power they transfer to transnational corporations playing off one country against another and being able to prevent countries enacting laws to protect the environment or labor. All part of the march to corporate control of the world. But again, since that's where everybody is heading, I'm not sure Canada has the ability to go against it all on its own.

This.

TPP is a huge lie.

It must not go through.

I'm all for free trade, as long as everybody's working on a level playing field... but that doesn't always pan out either. :(

It's like letting the USA compete with us for certain cash crops or farm products. A new report finds that $62 of every $100 that U.S. farmers earn comes from one level of government or another.

We all know what dairy costs there compared to us but that's because the consumer in the USA pays twice, once in the store and once to the government. We started paying subsidies to dairy farmers because of the TPP last year. Canada just entered the global tax subsidy race, and the dairy industry got the first golden egg.

Financial sector stability and increased shareholder value is of the utmost importance. Any negatively affected Canadians not in the loop will simply have to learn to live with less.
