Its the human things that matter. If the riches make it harder to have frequent and trustworthy relationship between people, is it worth it? asked John Helliwell, the lead author of the report and an economist at the University of British Columbia. The material can stand in the way of the human.

The US is the most diverse country on the planet so I suppose we can leave 'diversity' off the list of things that make people happy. I'm pretty confident that high levels of immigration don't contribute to happiness either.

Also, if wealth interferes with happiness then why is Norway - with the highest per capita assets in the world - #1?

Because they don't give corporate interests unmitigated reign over every breathing moment of their healthcare, education, and lives?

Study co-author and economist Jeffrey Sachs of Columbia University said in a phone interview from Oslo that the sense of community is deteriorating in the United States.

“We’re becoming more and more mean spirited. And our government is becoming more and more corrupt. And inequality is rising,” Sachs said, citing research and analysis he conducted on America’s declining happiness for the report. “It’s a long-term trend and conditions are getting worse.”

University of Maryland’s Carol Graham, who wasn’t a study author but did review some chapters, said the report mimics what she sees in the American rural areas, where her research shows poor whites have a deeper lack of hope, which she connects to rises in addictions to painkillers and suicide among that group.

There is deep misery in the heartland,” Graham, author of the book “The Pursuit of Happiness,” wrote in an email.

Mortality rates are falling in Canada and Europe, but are rising for middle-aged white men and women in the U.S.

Is this is really a surprise to anyone when abandoning each other, and abandoning most common decency and ethical behaviour, has been met with such rich reward since the Reagan era? When so many give into their worst characteristics (especially greed and selfishness), and because of such rotten behaviour essentially end up in control of the entire system, who can really be shocked when things for the rest get so much exponentially worse as time passes?

And, yeah, this is definitely much more the fault of Republicans and conservatives than it is of Democrats and liberals. The privatized and corporatized world is and always has been a realm of pure viciousness and when you let that mentality take over an entire society then that society will suffer for it.

Even though the US is a secular state, I notice any politician has a hard time getting elected unless they profess a strong Christian belief. But they always seem to forget a very important lesson from Jesus himself:

Luke 10 33-37 Luke 10 33-37:
33 But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. 34 He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, brought him to an inn and took care of him. 35 The next day he took out two denarii[c] and gave them to the innkeeper. ‘Look after him,’ he said, ‘and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.’

36 “Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?”

37 The expert in the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.”

Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.”

Nothing in Luke 10 says to tax your countrymen and then congratulate yourself on your charitable giving when you give someone else's money to the poor.

Seems to me a lot of secular types have a problem discerning government taxation and spending from personal self sacrifice. It's not the same thing.

The rise of pseudo-Christianity at the hands of the religious right hasn't helped. It's made everything that much worse, that the church has become a haven for vicious politics, and political careerists. That which was allegedly born out of charity to all and love for all wasn't meant to be used as a merciless cudgel to beat down on social/cultural enemies.

For seventy years the secularists and humanists have championed a post-moral society and now you're so surprised when you discover what it looks like.

Amazing how good the conservatives and church-goers have been at becoming post-moral themselves, in a manner of ethics-free depravity that would make a pornographer reel back stunned. I mean, how many of your Christian GOP reps and senators are going to congratulate themselves over the great work they are doing as they kill an extra forty to fifty thousand people per year by taking away the small amount of healthcare they have?

Just the fake ones. And just the ones who put their political party far ahead of their duty to what Jesus stood for.

Shouldn't you be happy about that? I mean you harbor a seething hatred for Christians and Christianity so shouldn't you be happy when they abandon their faith?

Obamacare is mandatory insurance. It is NOT healthcare coverage when the premiums are too high to afford and the annual deductibles are so high that no one can afford to use it.

Obamacare was free money for the insurance industry. Period.

Tax cuts for health insurance execs making over $500k isn't "free money", of course

I don't mind paying a little more in tax so that someone else can have life saving surgery, or so that someone in the North can get cheaper food delivered on paved roads.

To me, it's exactly the same thing whether I do it myself, or whether the Government uses it's economy of scale to do it for me.
