I don't think anyone is dumb. He's just fallen in to the trap of believing his own 'common sense' is infallible and therefore everyone else is wrong.

All we have to do is find the point at which his 'common sense' is overridden by actual facts, and he might sill have the epiphany needed to rejoin the rest of us in 'reality'. I'm guessing they didn't teach the Scientific Method in his school.

Can you override it with facts when all facts that conflict with his "common sense" are fake?

The flat Earthers said they would only believe it if they are able to see it or experience it. They put a lot of stock and a lot of value in what they could see and what they could observe by themselves. They want physical proof.

We have to approach them on a level of joint understanding. When we don’t agree on basic facts, it becomes very hard to find an entry point. The best way would be to show them something that proves the Earth is not flat. Unfortunately, I do not have the money to send each of them to space. But perhaps showing them a rocket launch might be a step in that direction. They were very skeptical of Elon Musk’s recent Falcon Heavy that put a car in space.

There are things he knows to be true. All we have to do is suss out those things, and how they relate to Science to hopefully re-orient him.

Like if you dig a well at two points on the surface of the Earth, and measure the angle of the shadow, why are the angles different?

Why are the times different in each timezone? Why are all the planets in the solar system round, but Earth is flat? When you look at the camera on the ISS, why do you see this:

Well seems like you've never really had a close encounter with a flat earther have you Dr Science! They have all sorts of bizarre made up crap to explain it all away ( even though it creates more contradictions and questions than they answer )

Different length of shadows and time zones : Sun is not billions of miles away and as big as evil Nasa says it is. Its much smaller and only about 3-5000 miles above the flat earth and circumnavigates around the Gleason mapped flat earth.

How can we get Solstices with this? Does the Sun slow down and speed up or change directions? I don't see how the poles can get 24 hour days or night.

I thought that a flat earth would be easy to explain, seems it's a lot harder.

I was curious so I had to look it up. So various explanations. The sun changes speeds and changes altitudes? Also you can't see it from the other side of the "flat earth" because atmosphere refracts the light down towards the ground. This also changes the shape of the "spotlight".

So basically complete and utter bullshit.

One of my favourites is taking a video of a helicopter while saying "Since the earth is spinning beneath it, the helicopter should be getting closer to me and it isn't! Therefore flat earth!"

It's no different that climate change deniers, but I hold out hope that there is a magic string I can pull to untangle the knot. It's my nature. And if I can't, then it's good exercise for me to get back to 'first principles' and remember why it is that Science is the best.
