Toronto march in support of Hong Kong protests blocked by pro-China group

$1:
A Toronto march organized in support of pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong was prevented from going forward on Saturday after a clash with counter demonstrators.

A few hundred people gathered outside Old City Hall on Saturday afternoon with the intention of marching around the Eaton Centre in solidarity with protestors in Hong Kong, who are in their 10th week of advocating for an extradition bill to be withdrawn.

The bill would allow residents to be extradited from Hong Kong to China, something protestors say could heighten risk for activists and those critical of China.

Protestors are also calling for the resignation of Hong Kong's leader Carrie Lam, democratic elections and an independent investigation into the police’s use of force.

Gloria Fung, one of the organizers of the march and president of Canada-Hong Kong Link, said that when they arrived at Old City Hall, they were met by members of a pro-China group who was chanting “one China” and was blocking the protesters from leaving the area.

“They do not have a permit to stage this rally here,” Fung told reporters. “They are only here to jeopardize our freedom of expression. In Canada we show zero tolerance to this kind of intimidation and harassment.”

Fung also alleged that some volunteers and organizers had been attacked in the clash. Toronto police have confirmed that no one was physically injured.

CTV News Toronto tried to speak to pro-China protestors, but many would not speak to on camera. One man said that reporters and civilians were being attacked by protestors in Hong Kong.

“We want one China. Anything can be negotiated, but we want to talk in peace,” he said.

Video from the rally shows the two groups yelling at each other while waving flags and holding signs that say “we are not rioters” and “withdraw the extradition bill.”

Fung said that instead of marching, the group will remain outside Old City Hall in “peaceful protest.”

“This is Canada. We have the constitutional right to freedom of expression. No one can take that from all of us.”

Fung also called on the Canadian government and the international community to take action.

Earlier in the day, Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland issued a joint statement with her European Union counterpart condemning the violence in Hong Kong.

“For the last two months, large numbers of citizens have been exercising their fundamental right of assembly. However, there has recently been a rising number of unacceptable violent incidents, with risks of further violence and instability,” the statement reads.

“It is crucial that restraint be exercised, violence rejected and urgent steps taken to de-escalate the situation.

Right? It’s a safe bet this counter protest wasn’t an organic occurrence.

I don't know how true it is but, I heard from someone who lives in Toronto that the anti Hong Kong protesters were mostly Chinese foreign exchange students from the Universities?

If so, how many of these people are actually part of the Chinese State Security Organs and over here for nothing more than spying and information gathering?

So, if they are pro-China, why are they in Canada? [huh]

Because that's where Beijing bought the ticket for.

They came over seeking a better life. Yet still want to do things the way China does and will demand you let more people from China in.

Canada should pull a China trick. Round up all the anti-protesters who are dual national Chinese and "re-educate" them in some nice camps.

How strong is the kool aid that you'd experience the personal freedom in North America and still do China's bidding?

Maybe they have family in China that's under threat.

Or it could be like I said. Some of them are actually members of the mainland Chinese security organs put here for purposes other than just getting an education. And if not that, then these University kids are likely the cream of the crop from the high ranking Chinese Communist Party families and as such are living a pampered life both here and in China. So opposing the Communist gov't would be completely foreign to them and they would react automatically when told to counter protest.

Because they come here for post-secondary education (and maybe a little real estate manipulation) and support the Communist Party lockstep. They did the same thing in February when U of T students dared to elect a Tibetan-Canadian as student union president.

$1:
Chemi Lhamo had barely claimed victory last week as student-union president at the University of Toronto’s Scarborough campus when it began: first a petition demanding she be removed from the post, then a torrent of online abuse.

The calls came from what appeared to be Chinese students, insisting her long-standing advocacy for Tibetan independence was “irrational” and made her ineligible to represent the student body.

Some simply wished for her to die or be raped.

“People like u deserve a gunshot. Hope you go to hell immediately,” said a poster named caesssar_hsu on Instagram.

“Why we elect a person who don’t love her own country,” asked Ziyu Wang, one of almost 11,000 petition signers, though Lhamo is Canadian.

Meanwhile, in nearby Hamilton, a coalition of Chinese students’ groups protested a talk Monday at McMaster University about well-documented human-rights abuses against China’s Uyghur minority.

I’m sure there are a lot of Chinese who genuinely support their government’s position. That kind of thinking is not confined to China. It is disturbing, though, and we shouldn’t allow them to disrupt demonstrations supporting Hong Kong. Reminds me of the anti--Dalai Lama protests in Canada years ago. I was shocked when I saw them.

So Chinese educators aren't good enough for them? ;)

It would be awesome if we could figure out a way to show these pro-China pukes the door.

I met enough ex-Commies in Europe, most were 'true believers'.

What, and lose all that lovely no strings attached investment money ?
Can't do that.

Also racism.
