Edmonton police are tight lipped about background details but Heavy.Com managed to scrape up some facts.

$1:
* An ISIS flag was found inside the suspect’s car, the CBC reports. Police confirmed that detail, but have not released further information, including whether they believe the suspect had contact with ISIS fighters overseas, or if he was inspired to commit the attacks in Edmonton on their behalf. The so-called Islamic State has often encouraged its followers to commit attacks through any means possible, including random stabbings and by using vehicles as weapons.

* The suspect, identified by multiple media outlets as Abdulahi Sharif, is originally from Somalia and has refugee status in Canada, according to Royal Canadian Mounted Police Assistant Commissioner Marlin Degrand.

* Degrand said authorities made the decision to treat the case as possible terrorism because of “the totality of the information,” including “the nature of the incident, the nature of the evidence found at the initial scene and the actions of the suspect.”

* Police would not provide information about other evidence that was found, other than the ISIS flag. When asked if they could confirm that a manifesto with anti-Semitic writing was found during the investigation, Degrand and Knecht declined to answer.

* Abdulahi Sharif was known to authorities before the attack, Edmonton Police Chief. Public Safety Minister, Ralph Goodale, said Sunday that Sharif was on a “police watch list,”

* At a later press conference, Royal Canadian Mounted Police Assistant Commissioner Marlin Degrand said that Sharif was investigated by the RCMP in 2015 after a complaint was made that he was “espousing extremist ideology.”

$1:
At a busy border crossing just south of San Diego, Abdulahi Hasan Sharif walked into the United States on July 12, 2011.

He had no documents and no right to be there. Almost immediately, he was turned over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

What happened after Sharif was taken into U.S. custody is unclear; American officials won't say if he actually made an asylum claim in that country. But U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has confirmed that just a few months later, on September 22, 2011, an immigration judge ordered Sharif removed to Somalia.

Canadian officials have confirmed that Sharif arrived in this country at an official port of entry in 2012. He went through the "regular process" and was granted refugee status later that year, the government said.

Canada accepted about 90 per cent of asylum claims from Somalia in 2012, according to documents from the Canadian Council for Refugees.

From the police informant they put in his cell, he did it because he was driving without insurance, and because he got scared he would be arrested.

You know what wasn't in the trial? Any mention of an ISIS flag, and no charges related to terrorism.

Perhaps so, but the damage they do is not.

Except when it does damage to people we don't like.

In this case which is the conspiracy theory?

The one where the Edmonton police who previously and even now were and are refusing to cough up any kind of information like an alleged manifesto or the totality of what was found in the perp's vehicles but but now have a court-friendly story they are falling over themselves to give you convenient details of regarding an undercover investigation while the CBC who before were offering friendly tugs of the weiner for any official wanting to hide information but now are swearing to the totality of truth to some frightened ISIS supporter who was on a watch list now deciding it would be better to tell some friendly cellmate who just turns up that "No. Not terrorism, Bud. I just had a bad dream."

or...

A Somali refugee might be a terrorist who had crashed the southern border of America and been ordered out of the country but disappeared, then turned up in a friendlier Canada that shook his hand and made him a refugee, followed by him winding up on a police watch list for espousing extremist ideology in his adoptive country followed by him following the ISIS playbook of knocking people down in vehicles and stabbing what he missed, then an ISIS flag turns up in his vehicle and too many people see it to deny.

Be serious. Who's really more gullible for believing what the facts in either column add up to.

Should actually post this in the funny thread, because it's yet another joke.....

Man who tried to kill Edmonton police officer, pedestrians sentenced to 28 years

$1:
EDMONTON — A man convicted of attacking an Edmonton police officer and then running down four pedestrians with a U-Haul van has been sentenced to a total of 28 years in prison.

Abdulahi Hasan Sharif, 32, was handed 18 years for striking Const. Mike Chernyk with a car before stabbing him multiple times outside a football game in September 2017.

“It was a miracle that Const. Chernyk was not killed or seriously injured, but the lack of serious injury was a function of chance and in no way mitigates the gravity of what occurred,” Court of Queen’s Bench Justice Paul Belzil said Friday as he delivered the sentence.

“The facts in this case are unique and extraordinary.”

Chernyk testified during the trial that he was on traffic duty outside an Edmonton Eskimos game when he was struck by a car. He next remembered a man on top of him, stabbing him in the head with a knife.

The man then ran away and, a few hours later, police pulled over a U-Haul van at a checkpoint. The van sped off and, as it was being pursued by police, hit the pedestrians in the city’s downtown.

Sharif was also sentenced to 10 years for fleeing from the police and running down the pedestrians.

“The criminal flight from police turned into a criminal rampage, presenting the police with a dangerous and dynamic situation,” said Belzil. “The four civilian pedestrians became targets of opportunity.”

Sharif was convicted by a jury in October on the charges that included five counts of attempted murder, criminal flight causing bodily harm and dangerous driving.

He was not represented by a lawyer at trial, did not testify or call any witnesses and did not make any sentencing submissions.

Belzil noted that Sharif was given the opportunity to address court and never did so.

“There is no evidence that he is remorseful for his attack,” said the judge.

Crown prosecutors had argued that Sharif deserves a maximum life sentence for the targeted attack on the officer, and 20 years to be served at the same time for fleeing from police and trying to kill the pedestrians.

Outside court, they said it was an incredibly difficult case for everyone.

“We continue to wish the best to the victims and their families, and we hope that the City of Edmonton as a whole can heal from these events,” said Crown prosecutor Elizabeth Wheaton.

She said the judge came to a thoughtful, reasoned decision.

“Our primary concern in cases like these is the protection of the public in the future as well as general deterrence,” said Wheaton.

Her colleague, Chief Crown prosecutor Shelley Bykewich, said they expected Sharif would get a life sentence for the attack on the police officer.

Edmonton Police Chief Dale McFee, who read a community impact statement Thursday, said he has mixed emotions about the sentence.

“I feel like we’ve been heard but I see the victims and I see what impact this had on our city and my police service and you are always going to wonder if it’s enough,” he said outside court Friday. “Things like this aren’t something we as a city or a country can accept.”

Supt. Stacey Talbot, who’s in charge of the RCMP’s integrated national security enforcement team in Alberta, said police still believe it was a terrorist attack.

“Based on the evidence that was gathered and in consultation with our prosecutorial partners, it was decided that in the best interest of the administration of justice that attempted murder and the additional charges would be laid,” she said.

Talbot, who confirmed an ISIS flag was found in Sharif’s car, declined to provide any further details about that investigation pending an appeal.

Either side can appeal in the next 30 days.
