Florida is one of the most visited states in the country. It is a "fly to" state. Hey don't ask me ask your fellow countrymen. Oh thats right, you can't because they have already left for Florida seeing as its mid November.

The key word here is 'visit'.

Lots of Albertans do the same thing with Palm Springs and Phoenix, but come spring, the vast majority come right back home.

rickc rickc:
It looks like quite a few employers are flying into the sunshine state as well. Orlando -Kissimmee-Sanford ares had the nations largest growth of manufacturing jobs last year. Up 23.6% since 2012. Miami-Miami beach-Kendall came in fourth. West palm beach-Boca Raton - Delray beach placed fifth.

The last time I was in Florida, all I saw were tourists and Americans trying to scam cash in on them.

rickc rickc:
The vast majority of my co workers are people who fled California.

Interesting, but anecdotal evidence.

rickc rickc:
I can honestly say that I have never known anyone moving to California. That is why is cost four times as much to rent a U-haul leaving California than it does to rent one going there. /

I know several people who have moved to California, and frankly, if the US had a decent health care system, I probably would too. But given that my daughter has a 'pre-existing condition' that she was born with, odds are, I will NEVER move to the USA.

But I don't mind visiting once and a while.

None of that is for anything life threatening. If you come into a hospital and need surgery in you will get it. So no, it isn't a possibility. Please stop spreading false information about a system you do not understand.

I'm not worried about waiting a few weeks for a MRI, I'm worried about going bankrupt when I have to take my daughter to the ER a couple times a month, especially if she has to stay in an isolation room at the children's hospital for a week so they can stabilize her auto-immune disorder.

If I lived in the USA, my daughter likely would have died before her 3rd birthday because despite our income, we simply couldn't have afforded all the hospital stays, specialist visits, expensive medications, and insanely complex tests that finally identified her ultra-rare disorder (only a few dozen people worldwide have been identified with the same condition). Nevermind all the time I had to take off work to rush her to the hospital whenever her fever spiked to 40 degrees.

Instead, the biggest expense I had to worry about was the $14/day for parking. And because of the incredible team of physicians (yes a team!) assigned to her care, she recently celebrated her 7th birthday and is as happier and healthier than most with her condition.

Personally, I've been lucky most of my life and never needed any medical care aside from the occasional visit to my family doctor. But when my annual physical turned up something odd, I was referred to an urologist and saw him a few weeks later. An ultrasound the SAME day as the appointment revealed a few kidney stones and I had surgery within a week to deal with them. Problem solved.

*Friendly PSA: Kidney stones are the most excruciating pain (most common in 30 to 50 year old men) many will ever have and one way to prevent them is to add some lemon juice to your drink of choice, as the citric acid hrlps prevent stones from forming.

So yeah, forgive me if I'm not worried about the propaganda the Frasier 'Institute' puts out to try and trick Canadians into thinking private healthcare would be better.

In my own experience )and that of everyone I know), it's not better and nobody will ever convince me otherwise.

I went to Florida in '71. That's before Disney, etc. I hated it. The best way I could explain it to people was it was like Idylwyld Drive with palm trees. May as well stay home!

I am to lazy to break down each and every quote. You are a smart guy, I know you can follow what I am saying easily enough.
The snowbirds always come home because they HAVE TO, not because they WANT TO. The U.S. government only allows them to stay for 182 days during a 12 month period. I live in an area flooded with snowbirds. They always bitch about having to leave. They come here of their own free will. They leave because they have to. Even if the U.S government said that Canadians could stay forever without incurring any U.S. tax liability, they would still have to go back or risk losing their healthcare. The super wealthy Canadians (who can afford the outrageous healthcare costs in the states on their own, or their job provides it) don't go back.

Who was scamming you in Florida? Why don't you show me some stuff that is cheaper in your neck of the woods than Florida? Car rental? Gasoline? Food? Beer? Alcohol? Water sports? Entertainment? Anything? Its not just the snowbirds. Florida probably gets more Canadian tourists in one month in the summer (when the snowbirds have all gone home) than your Province gets American tourists all year long.

There is nothing anecdotal about Californians moving to Las Vegas. Its a fact. A fact backed up by the census, moving companies, and real estate companies.

https://www.century21.com/CENTURY-21-Ga ... 000s-14346

I am not surprised that someone living in a place where the various government agencies tag team you to take your wealth knows some people that have moved to California,(and you live in one of the better places to live when it comes to taxes but its still to damn high) Why not? I too would trade one tax and spend locale for another tax and spend locale with far superior weather. If I had to pick between New York and California, I would pick California every day of the week, and twice on Sunday. Thankfully I do not have to make that choice.

Sorry to hear about your daughters condition. Unfortunately I do not see that problem being solved anytime soon in the states. But hey I could be wrong. Things are changing fast in the states these days. It could happen. No one thought that we would have a black President 20 years ago. I think that you are being prudent waiting for a less financially crippling situation than what you could possibly be facing in the states these days. Medical bills is one of the leading causes of bankruptcy. Even if the states had a one payer medical system, I do not think that you would be prepared for the outrageous cost of housing in southern California coming from Alberta. A fucking dog house in the hood goes for half a mil, (slightly playing with the numbers). If you owned a home in Vancouver island or Victoria, than it would be a lateral move, cost and tax wise. Alberta? Not so much. I had a friend a few years back bragging about how he was moving to San Fran and going to be making twice what he (and I) was making in Vegas. He is now working 2 full time jobs there.

I stick to what I said about California being the loss leader in population. Americans are leaving California in droves. That is an indisputable fact. Even the second generation Mexican Americans are leaving. They cannot afford to live there either.

Oh goodness gracious. Nobody wants to permanently immigrate to Florida. The snowbirds bitch about vacation being over and having to go back to work and cold weather That doesn’t at all mean they really want to give up their healthcare and immigrate to the land of crime, rampant poverty, shitty s schools, corrupt cops and insane politics

He laid out some facts, which I'm not disputing.

In short, stop acting like whiny little children. You've had a free ride for almost 100 years paid for by the magic coincidence there was oil in your province, and mother Canada ALLOWED you to have it. Now grow up and pay your taxes like the rest of the adults in Canada have been doing since the dawn of time.

P.S. Screw Quebec. That's a whole other issue.

But that is trolling, plain and simple.

I couldn't agree with you more! My wife has an auto-immune disease as well. Both of us have graduate degrees, and we fall into the top tax bracket, paying a metric ton of taxes (happily by the way), but we always talk about someday retiring somewhere warm and it just can't happen. In Canada, we live a solid life of upper class privilege earned through hard work. Her disease has almost no real effect on our lives aside from lost free time. But in the USA, we'd literally be bankrupt, and likely wind up on welfare or some other odd welfare assistance just to scrape by in order to afford her medical care.

Medical care is a right, not a privilege.

Exactly! At least in the civilized world.
And my wife also has an auto immune disease (MS) and has been very well treated by Saskatchewan ‘s health care system. I also have been diagnosed with two types of cancer. Four operations and lots of post op treatment s were prompt and paid for by my taxes. (Including more MRI’s than I can remember). Although I do think Boots got off easy with $14 parking

I have said this before, and expect I will have to say it again, it does not matter if you have “the best” of everything, it’s outcomes for people that matter. The US has the best of everything and almost third world outcomes,

R=UP

After my cancer surgery, some people I know seemed dismayed that it took "so long". I always responded, "I'm still alive. Therefore the treatment was correct.".

So far, 4 years cancer free too! And skip the CT scans, go for a stool test instead.

Why would an Albertan wish to separate from Canada and join a failed society? They're just pissed off not actually insane.
Hell, most of them are slowly realizing Notley wasn't that bad, they're not cowering under their bed guns in hand trying to convince each other she was Stalin.
